Hi Mark:

Quick voice of reason here - the "extensive care" is horseshit. I've had mine 40,000 miles now and it requires almost as little care as a Civic.

1) Oil, yes it consume oil, by design. It's not that big of a deal - about every 2 weeks, check the oil. About every 2000 to 3000 miles it will need a quart of oil (not every 1000 miles, although it is possible that it is that frequent. Mine is every 3000 miles since it was brand new). If you forget to check the oil, there is a friendly reminder light that comes on in the right hand gauge cluser under the oil pressure gauge. Just add a quart when that comes on.

2) Have your dealer change the spark plugs every 30,000 miles. No biggie.

3) Flooding: Mine has never flooded. Many have never had the problem. You likely will not either. Best way to prevent that is that if you start if from dead cold, be sure to drive it at least a bit before shutting it off. It is very likely you will never flood.

4) Gas Hog: That comes with the territory. If you bought a car for looks without knowing anything about it, you deserve this one.

5) Radiator fluid evaporates? Where did that sunshine bullshit come from? That's total crapola.

Bottom line, get the car serviced every 5000 miles at a dealership and you'll never know the difference.

Did they also tell you:

- The engine has no valves to adjust, no timing belt to break, no rods to snap, etc. Three moving parts in the engine, that's it.
- It is about the size of a pony beer keg

Embrace the engine, it is your friend!

lol, yea we bought the car and had the oil changed. drove it for 1000k low oil already! but like i said. my questions are answered. v engines do have lots of moving parts that may need to be replaced, but not until like 20o thounsandK....so if u compare that to 40k need new engine, to 200k, u do the math, whats cheaper? even a timing belt every 70k is still cheaper than a new renesis engine. feel me? lol idk bout a 4 banger, it'll probly blow the engine dragin the 8.

well how hard were you driving the engine? Drive it hard and it'll eat up the oil.

and no, you won't need a new engine at 40k if you maintain it regularly (just like you should with any car). No one car is 100% bullet proof.

And there are 4 bangers out there dragging heavier cars

You've got to be kidding!
Piston engines w/timing belt where belt will have to be replaced = 100%
Renesis engines that need to be replaced within the normal lifespan of a modern automobile engine = 1-2%

Another person that cant accept that the Rotary is different.. Did you get a warranty? If not then & you set yourself up for failure.

The fact you generalize to try & prove a point is rediculous.

ABBID - you could have picked a better boat!

You can read the name (Cougar Ace) of the boat that keeled over with 4000 Mazdas on board.....

You knew that, and were being ironic, right?

Ok, now I'm thinking you're just some idiot troller here.

Where in the hell besides the internet did you read that the car needs a new engine every 40k? Mine's at 40k, compression is like brand new.

You sure that the oil was filled fully?

You know what? Go pound ham you moron. You've got to be some bullshit moron troll.

Oh yeah, they always need a new engine. Always. I'm on my 23rd. I buy them in six packs.

It's too much work for you to put some oil and radiator fluid in... so you'd rather put a new engine in?

You really have no concept of what is involved in an engine swap, do you?

damn. not that this guy is a rhodes scholar, but cmon. he's just ignorant, you don't have to be asses about it. i feel like most people pride themselves with being members on a relatively mature forum. so act like it.

markstibbyspot- you're ignorant. not an idiot, but just ignorant. the renesis requires a little more attention than a civic. true. but give it the suggested attention, and i guarantee you, within a few percentage points, that a stock renesis will run more miles than you will ever put on it. true story. engine failures occur with this thing because this engine has been developed by ONE, singular company over 40 years time while every other major manufacturer has been refining the piston engine for 60 or more. the rotary is idiosyncratic, and for the price you'd pay for an engine swap, you'd be better off purchasing a different car. again, best of luck, and don't mind the people here who are a little prideful about their cars. we just happen to find the rotary the best part of the car, rather than its pitfall.

I swear this has to be one of the most trolled car I've ever known. If not the most trolled then certain the top 5 for cars under 50k.

Why is it that so many people have so much against the 8? Is it just the whole unique is scary and needs to be lashed out at in order to make one's self feel safe concept or what?

To the OP:

Take a large dose of common sense and think. If your oil is down a little its no immediate-pull-over-now situation...top it off when you get home. I don't own an 8 (yet) and I still check the oil and top it off regularly on my car because its a good idea. Warm up for 5 min? Well ANY car, regardless of its power plant, should sit for a min or two before driving just to get the oil warmed up and should always be babied just a little til it warms up.

Coolant boiling off? News to me. A well maintained car doesn't just loose coolant. Why? The system is under pressure when hot and pretty well sealed when cold. Unless you have a leak you shouldn't see a noticeable drop.

Engines going? Yea some do. But so do a lot of V engines as well. The "internet bitching" percentage does not accurately reflect the actual percentage. This holds true for all cars.

Now stop worrying and have your girl drive some twisties.

First time I did it I dropped the oil filler cap in front of the motor where it couldn't be reached. It was 20 below and I was wearing a suit. I had to inch to the dealer several miles away while watching my rearview the whole time...even then it took a tech 20 minutes to fish the damned thing out of there.

I have to admit though, I happen to be exceptionally incompetent.

haha, wow! u flamers are a bunch of idiots! take pride in your ride, i understand so do i. idk how a simple questions especially asking for a list of engines that would work is so hard to answer? why do u all get offensive?!? im not dissing the 8'. u all afraid the 8 won't give it up to ya, when it's offended? lol....yes, im a noobie on the rotory, im not getting rid of the car we love the style. not bitching period. i just tried to find out what would be more convenient for my g/f. all u meatheads that are flaming get a girl in your life! u will understand!haha... i just thought it was easier to put in a v engine. idk the exact statistics on when an engine needs replacement, never experienced it! hopefully never will, but when i was shopping around it was incredable just how many people had new engine. the one i currently own, the guy took care of it, he had all his reciepts on maitenance from the dealer in a folder and it still needed to replace the engine at 40k?!? makes me wonder. just worried that's all. don't get all offensive, if u didn't wanna help. go cry somewhere else! and stop being an interenet bully, or go start a new thread to flame.

also, i could care less about rotary, yes compact, i heard alot of great things about it, especially for tuners, but u all gotta realize the reason i wanted to swap it out was not for performance/ rather for convenience. also i wasn't going to swap it out now, just incase i blew the engine. just trying to get an idea what i would be up against and seeing if it was worth rebuilding the rotary engine or getting a v engine that i know how to maintain.
