I just got a new 2006 RX-8 from the dealer yesterday. Should I even be worried about this problem?

Sorry for the newbie question. I'm just making sure my baby is okay.

The dealership is supposed to handle any necessary service or TSB's before they deliver the car to you, so anything that was necessary is probably already taken care of. You can contact your dealership if you want to double check. Have fun with the new car!

fwiw I got my recall done yesterday. Frankly, the car seems to have a MUCH better power-curve, although that could be the 'just got flashed' freshness, which may eventually go away.

Other than that, still have an idle which registers 500-750, and no other changes felt/noticed.

Anyone wanna dyno this weekend? I bet I can see 200whp now.

I'd probably dyno in Kirkland again - IIRC it's about $60. Anyone care to remind me?

Recall Work

Just had recall work done at Herzog Meier in Beaverton. Most importantly my car was fine. Other positives were that a CX_-7 was waiting for me and was fairly pleasant to drive. They did the flash and replaced 2 of the plugs, so now I have a car with 2 new plugs and 2 with 12k on them! My car seemed a little peppier, but I only drove about 3 miles home.

On the not so positive side my car was not topped off when I got there (but they did follow me to the gas station and I got 3/4 of a tank out of Mazda). They use to have a "Mazda" sevice writer there but he was no where to be found today. I went to the counter where the VW guys were and they Jerry wrote the work order. When I picked my car up I was handed paper work at the cashiers office and told my car would be driven around front. There was not any explanation about my car at all. I had the feeling no one really knew any thing about Mazdas.

I had 4 other issues with car to be fixed under warranty. First my center console works but is kind of mashed down and somewhat hard to slide, it was not fixed paper work said "could not duplicate problem". 2nd the small strip on passenger side by front spoiler has lost the screw that holds it in place. Service writer called it an "engine shield" the Tech did not know what he was talking about so paper work says" customer concern not evident at this time." 3rd the clamp that holds the floor mat in place was broken and that was fixed. 4th and most important
my car sits about 1/2 "lower on the driver side than the passenger side response was " Reccomend having alignment checked"??? does this sound like an alignment problem?

Overall I was not that impressed, mostly it was the smaller stuff. I think not going over my paperwork is what bothers me the most. I think I would give them a "C". I don;t think I would pay them to work on my car.

mcstin,

I'm scheduled to take my car in next Friday. After reading your post I'm not too excited. I called today to see check the status on the passenger sun visor replacement. When I called the usual person (who was very helpful) and the one I assume you refer to was not there. They told me he no longer works there. Too bad because he was very helpful. The new person does not know much about the RX-8 and is coming up to speed so hopefully he is a quick study.

They also informed the flooding TSB is no longer valid and the scheduled work has been canceled. I assume this is because the recall work covers this area.

Interesting you received a CX-7. Did you get it from Enterprise? They told me only the standard vehicle from Enterprise was available. I have no idea what 'standard' means but I do not think it means the new CX-7.

Lastly they seemed caught off guard when I requested they note to use premium fuel when filling the car.

There was a guy there that was mid thirties with a beard I wish I had gotten his name he must be a manager as everyone kept asking him questions. He over heard me talking to Jerry and told him to get me a CX-7 as it was part of the recall program. They had 3 there and on the key tag it said "service loaner" it had 297 miles on it.

The recall work was done OK. I think the guy that left name was Devin, he seemed knowledgable when I stopped by last week. I think they have people covering since there is no "Mazda" guy.

The lot attendant followed me to the Shell station at Murray and TV Hwy, he asked me what grade of gas I wanted. I told them not wash my car but they could vacuam it, they did neither, but no big deal.

My last car was a Mercedes and I knew that I would not get that level of service, but not to go over the work with me was way less than I expected. I was confident there were no engine problem with my car, but what if I was not as well read and only had the letter from Mazda I would have freaking out all day waiting to find out what was going on with my car. The people there seemed understaffed and unfamiliar with Mazda, not their fault but not exactly confidence inspiring for the customer.

I called them today to request the CX-7 and they said no problem. I think the person helping me the other day did not realize there were loaners.

I got home from University Mazda a little while ago. I was stuck driving in rush hour traffic so I really couldn't get on it hard.

They:
They flashed the computer
performed the engine recall check (mine is fine)
Replaced the leading spark plugs
oil change
filled gas up and washed it

I was especially happy about the gas since I was nearly empty.

One thing I noticed immediately is the smoother response through 1st gear. Wow. It's a huge improvement. The power curve seems to be much more even and smooth through all the gears now. I was able to get on it from a stop once and I was red lined and through 1st and 2nd gear before I knew it. It seems to be a bit quicker with the new computer/plug love. I would highly recommend getting this done to anyone who is still debating on whether or not they should do it.

I imagine this is due to the smoother power response. I noticed the shift from 1st to 2nd seems nicer now as well.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. The silver 8 that was on the lift is still on the lift. I was talking to the shop manager and they are actually doing an engine swap on it; but it's not for the recall. He took me over and showed me the engine that was in the car. It was leaking coolant like crazy around one of the housings. It was a mess. The new engine was connected to the transmission and waiting to be lifted into place. It was cool to see it out of the car and to see the underside of the car without the engine/transmission in it.

Engine being replaced due to clogged catalytic

I have been having problems with power for some time now and can hear the catalytic converter rattle sometimes. I have taken it into Rich Mazda and they keep on telling me there are no problems. I got the letter and took it in for the recall. Now the engine is going to have to be replaced as well as what I suspect the clogged catalytic converter. I only had 18K miles on the car and concerned that this will happen again in the future.

I seem to recall them telling me it took a couple hours. I dropped it off at 9am and picked it up at 5pm so I really don't know for sure. I was just happy that they were able to do it with such little notice. I called and made the appointment on just this last Saturday afternoon.

I had my RX-8 in at University Mazda yesterday as well, black with a Mazdaspeed nose. I saw the silver one on the lift all gutted as well.

They did the recall, consisting of running the tests. I could see by the GPS they took it on the freeway. They replaced the leading plugs, reflashed the ECU. The Cat was good, but it had been replaced about 8 months ago already. Compression was good. They replaced the ignition coils because of a misfire showing up in the ECU History file, filled the gas, washed the car. I dropped it off in the AM, they gave me a Mazda 3 as a loaner and they had it ready by 4 pm. They also fixed some rattles in the interior, and a clunking noise in the passenger door for free.

The Car runs great.

Just got my RX-8 back from University Mazda after reading all the positive feedback about them. I had them do the recall work and also told them about my sunroof rattle. Based on the paperwork (they didn't go over it with me), they did the following:

Replaced spark plugs
Checked cat
Lubed the sunroof components
Replaced battery and starter, I think (hard start issue, TSB #01-004/05)
Topped off gas

They claimed they washed the car but I highly doubt it considering the dust on my hood and the dirty windshield. The rims were wet however, so maybe just a half-assed job. Also didn't see anything about them flashing the computer (maybe already done?) And I kind of doubt lubing the sunroof is going to permanently solve the rattling problem since there's a TSB that talks about replacing the components altogether due to premature wear.

They also tried to talk me into doing "30,000 mile maintenance" for $600+ dollars(!) because some of the fluids were "dirty." I think I'll change the fluids myself for a fraction of that cost, thank you.

Took my car in yesterday morning for the recall and to have the passenger sun visor replaced. They completed the recall work around 1pm but they mistakenly ordered the driver side sun visor. They ordered the correct sun visor and had it over-nighted so it should be at the dealership sometime Monday. They gave me the option to pick up the car and drop it off Monday morning or to keep the CX-7 over the weekend. I chose to keep the CX-7 because I wanted more seat time but mainly because I have been to the dealership a lot and did not want to be inconvenienced Monday morning before work.

A couple of weeks ago I got the recall stuff done and I actually passed all the stuff. Well I was getting the symptoms a few weeks ago before the whole recall thing went down like the hard to accelerate and the pingy sound in the catalytic converter during the hot weeks we had. So it passed, now this week it had done it again but at a stop light on the way home with my puppy. My car died completely. It took a couple of turns to get it going after that I took my puppy home and then I went back to the dealer and had the techy test drive it. It was only 1/2 a mile down the road he said that it was a canidate for a new engine. To say the least I was not pleased...Now I am stuck with driving the rental which is a Saturn Ion. I hate it soooo much because it doesn't even come close. I know I am compairing apples to oranges here but still...just venting. At least I get a new engine out of it and it will take them 3 weeks to fix because the engine is apparently coming from South Carolina. I hope it will get back sooner. Does anyone know if they roll back the odometer and warranty ?

They won't rollback the odometer (illegal) but I believe the warranty is being extended by several years for all owners. There was previous discussion about that here.

The warranty is extended by 1 year and 10K miles to 5 years / 60K miles. You should have recieved a letter about this as well.

The warranty extension is for everybody. You don't get anything different if they do replace your engine.
