It's very very odd. This isn't typical compression loss failure. I was getting a metallic rattle at 2000-3000RPM. I took it in suspecting the transmission, suspecting something on the input shaft side since it was RPM related, not vehicle speed related. My transmission has always been abnormally noisy IMHO for a rx8 trans compared to other rx8's I've driven.
The dealership thinks its the motor. After a few days they did a decarb and it seemed to improve the noise, but not make it totally go away. They are trying to get Mazda to approve a motor replacement now.
I'm rather stumped to what the actual culprit is internally, and I will likely never know since I'll never be able to see the teardown of the motor. The only thing that is odd about the motor lately, is my gas mileage has been on the decline. Power is still good.
