Plates front and center

So I was moving along with the morning traffic northbound at 405, a little past Kirkland, when I notice a State Trooper at the right shoulder about to merge back on the freeway. So I politely changed lanes to my left so I can give the State Trooper room to merge in. Mind you, I was only going 65. But the second I passed, the Trooper's car immediately went behind me and turned on all lights. What the??!!!! So I pulled over to the right shoulder of the freeway and waited for the Trooper. I was thinking to myself it'll either be about my tint (since mine is too dark and way below the required limit) or my not having a front license plate, because I was definitely not speeding. The Trooper comes over to my passanger side and she says the reason I was stopped was because I didn't have a front plate. /'sigh' After driving around for 3 years now with my RX8 having no front plate, I finally get pulled over for it. Well I kind'a knew it'll catch up on me sooner or later.

She then informs me that Washington Troopers are now cracking down on vehicles without front plates and that they are issuing tickets rather than giving drivers a warning.

Okay, lets hold on here for a minute.

First off, she was the cutest Washington State Trooper I have ever seen. I was totally mesmerized. Her brunette hair flowing around her cute face. And her perfume (oh god they let them wear perfume while on duty??!!) getting blown inside my car by the morning wind. Oh man I was totally thrown back because I was expecting some holier than thou Trooper guy telling me that I'm crap and he's god.

Anyway, so she asks me for my insurance card, registration, and license. At this point I knew I was getting a ticket for no front license plate. So she looks at my papers and goes - "if I give you a warning today, do you think that'll be more than enough for you to put your front license plate?" I gave her a big smile and said "Yes, definitely." She goes on saying, "Okay, what I'll do is mark your driver's license in our system so we know that we already gave you a warning the next time you get stopped. I was just smiling at her while she was talking and writing on her little notepad. She then gives back my license, insturcts me to get into speed at the shoulder and merge back to the freeway. Her final words of "Drive carefully now" to me was somewhat angelic.

That, my friends, really made my day today start so much better. hehe

Seriously though. If I was still single I would've asked her for her phone number.

You were lucky in more than one way. Did you get her phone number?

That's a bummer, time for us to start getting the permits for not having them?

BTW, this is totally because this state is dead broke and they need more money.

here's what they said when i inquired about the exemption:

Revised Code of Washington (RCW) 46.16.240 states in part, “The vehicle license number plates shall be attached conspicuously at the front and rear of each vehicle . . . PROVIDED HOWEVER, that in cases where the body construction of the vehicle is such that compliance with this section is impossible, permission to deviate there from may be granted by the state patrol. . . .”

A waiver is only issued if it is not possible to affix a front license plate due to the body construction of the vehicle. Therefore, if there is a license plate bracket made for the vehicle which may be affixed to the vehicle allowing for the font license plate to be displayed, you will be required to install it on your vehicle whether or not it requires you to drill holes.

If after researching you cannot find a license plate bracket that will work for your vehicle, you can apply for a front license plate waiver for your vehicle. These waivers are looked at on a case by case basis based on the original manufactured version of the vehicle and its ability to affix a front license plate. To request a front license plate waiver please write a letter articulating why you feel you should be exempt from the law, include a picture of the front of the vehicle, your license plate number, vehicle identification number (VIN), vehicle make and model, and any additional information you feel would outline your case and send to:

Washington State Patrol

Equipment & Standards

PO Box 42600

Olympia WA 98504-2600

Once the letter is received our office will research the availability of license plate brackets for your vehicle, review your case, and send you a letter with the decision.

Thank you for your inquiry.

Sincerely,

Equipment

Like people have posted in that thread. Get pulled over and when the cops ask if you know why he pulled you over you just say nope.
"I pulled you over because you have no front plate."
"Excuse me sir? Yes I do go look again."

"Sorry I bothered you, have a good day."

As you drive away.

No I did not. That's because I'm already married. Now if I were still single, I would definitely have asked for her number.

"Uhm excuse me, is there any way I can have your number so that I can get in touch with you and maybe meet for lunch so I can show you I have my front plates installed?"

I'm not sure though of how reliable it'll be if you're using your 8 as a daily driver. And especially if the car is lowered. If you have to drive through snow, that sucker may act as a scooper. Plus knowing how cops can be arseholes most of the time, they may give you grief if they see that it is a motorized retractable bracket. Last thing a pissed off cop needs is being made fun of.

I'm just being cautious here. I'm not dissing the product or the need for anyone to purchase and use it. The law does say "plates shall be attached conspicuously at the front and rear of each vehicle" here in Washington. If a cop sees you driving around without a front plate (because you have your front plate hidden down by your motorized bracket) and he pulls you over. You immediately flip your switch and up goes your front plate. I'm just gonna go out on a limb here and say that most cops aren't dumb. They may examine your bracket and will eventually figure out that it is a motorized bracket. He writes you a ticket for catching you with your front plate retracted and hidden. You argue that your front plate was not retracted and was visible before you got pulled over. Cop goes, "well do you think I would've pulled you over if I saw that your front plate was visible and not retracted?" You have two choices from here - (A) Argue more with the cop? and (B) Just get the ticket and fight it in court. Again, I'm gonna go out on another limb here. Who do you think the judge will side with? A law enforcement officer or a driver who has a sports car that looks good without a front plate but has a motorized retractable license plate bracket in front.

Hey you may get lucky and maybe you can get away from getting a ticket by using this toy. Personally though, since they already marked my driver's license with a warning of not having front plates. I'm not gonna risk it anymore even if I was able to get away of driving without one for 3 years since I bought my 8. I just don't want to waste my time, money, and effort to something that is easily fixed by just installing the front plates with the use of the front OE bracket. Even if my 8 isn't as cool looking anymore with the front plate installed, I'll just use that $130 towards a better performance mod.
