WA Quick question on “Use Tax”

Quick question on “Use Tax”. I am planning to relocate to Washington in the next few months; will I have to pay “Use Tax” on my vehicles when I register them?

If Washington state's "Use Tax" is like our Mass "Excise Tax" (aka "luxury tax" in some states) then most likely Yes. But it should be prorated commencing when you claim residence/register your vehicles.

Speaking of which, I just paid this year's Excise tax at my town hall. As a local tax the towns like to get it nice and early in the year; and if they don't they put your name in the newspaper and can ultimately place a lein on your property. Death and taxes... can't avoid either.

I believe whether you paid sale tax on the vehicle in the state you are moving from effects if and how much you have to pay. Also how long you owned the vehicle prior to moving to the state determines what is used as a value for basing the tax amount assessed.
