HAHAHHAHA!!!
Brilliant. There are so many wonderful things about that story I can't decide which bit I like most. At this moment it is the fact that they were dumb enough to do that right next door to the cop shop.

I actually found that article to be alarming and disturbing. Look at it this way:
2 kids find an empty parking lot late at night to practice stunts in. The safest possible FREE environment (I myself have never been able to afford a single track day, and I'm quite a bit older than them). What do they get for it? FELONIES. I didn't even know that was possible! Lest you forget a felony effectively ends your chance at being a productive citizen, ever. That's it! Game over!!
Does this mean if I get caught doing rodies in the ski area parking lot I would be just as boned? I do those all the time! We used to do them as a family when I was a kid! (I'm not even joking)

No man, it all just depends on the severity of the situation.
They prolly got really boned because they were filming it trying to put it on youtube.
And the reason they gave them such a harsh sentence is because there basically promoting doing that by putting it on youtube and letting the younger generations think its ok.
Ive done it before and I just got told to knock it off and if he caught me again hed give me a ticket for reckless driving.

^^ Rx-8u-Up has a point. Plus the fact that the car they were using wasn't even theirs (it was the dealership's property). I even think that they were lucky that the dealership didn't file charges against the two for "using" that G35 and just decided to fire their asses.
Look at it this way too. How would you feel if a close friend or even a relative "borrows" your RX8 without your knowledge and goes to an empty parking lot late night to practice stunts?
I think the reason why this was somewhat newsworthy was:
1) They didn't own the car they were "drifting" with. It was owned by and was the property of the car dealership they were working for.
2) Of all the parkinglots they decided to videotape their stunts, they choose the one that is next to a State Police station.
I'm sorry but those two are dumb-asses and I don't feel bad for them.

The worst part of their behavior was the use of someone elses property. For that they deserve felony theft charges.
Unfortunately our laws are so screwy, technically they can cite you for doing this stuff in your own driveway. Still, they ought to have gotten permission from the lot ower and used a car they were authorized to use.

if they were using others propery without permission - thats good they got busted.
I personally think that "not being allowed to videotape" something going on is horrible. If someone video tapes something - the only reason I can see that a cop would NOT want them to video tape is if they know they are doing some crooked ****. I would like to know why is it so illegal to record the things you go through? (im referring to more of an evidence situation) Why should cops be the only ones allowed to video tape from their cars?
If you are in public - you should be able to video tape anything you want - cops/cars/buildings/people who cares?
I do think the "wreckless driving part is a bit too much" they were on a private property area and not on any public road. This would be like the cops trying to give me a ticket for running a private stop sign in my apartment complex - its not right. Now if the owner of the dealership wanted to put charges of trespassing, vandalism, theft of property, then yes I could see those.
