Mazdaspeed painted calipers using PoLaK's stencil

Step 1 of course is cleaning the brake calipers...i also laid out all my stencils at each wheel so my dumba$$ didn't loose them...

These are great quality stencils by the way...

Step 2...I used VHT Cast Aluminum Caliper paint to provide the silver undercoat that would shine the Mazdaspeed logo after all is said and done...

Step 3..the next morning...apply the stencils on top of the undercoat...

Here I actually like the way mazdaspeed looked black on the silver caliper but it was to late for that...UGH!!>.

Step 4...lightly sanded over the caliper to provide a good contact for the G2..., masked off around the caliper so as to not get paint on the rotor..then tack clothed and used the air compressor to get the grit away...here I applied the Black G2 Caliper paint to the entire caliper and over the stencil..

Step 5: the major PITA part...G2 as I had forgotten is a more rubbery type caliper paint where VHT is more of a liquid based...so I ran into a problem when trying to remove the stencils the next morning..i ended up using a razor and going around each letter in order to not pull any of the surrounding G2 up with the stencil...any way ..i finally got it and will have to do very minor touch up's but overall it turned out very well..Thanks to PoLaK and his stenciling mayhem...

If you don't like it..I don't really care..it's my car and I could give 2 $hits what you think...if you like it...great...thanks alot...

Step 6: Put your wheels back on but NOT before you wash and wax those puppies up!....

Looks good. good to see this paint scheme as I have all the materials to do the same paint scheme on my Titanium with the RX-8 stencil once the weather improves in the NE...

Thanks for the write up Zero, and ill take note of the g2 comment.

I found removal of the stencil is easier with an exacto knife and tweezers.

As for the edgy comment it helps to layer the base coat as that will give you a smoother surface to place the decal on. (See the picture below of my redone caliper which had to be layered, because the prototypes I originally did, didn't have dashes on them)

Also Zero had a good idea with the light sanding to remove any uneven grime/dust on your calipers.

looks nice. however i have just one bone to pick with your sticker selection. what exactly is mazdaspeed about your brake setup?

not flaming i just think its mildly cheesy when you have stickers reppin' parts that are not equipped on your car.

Looking very nice to me. As far as Mazda Speed, there are many things that have the logo that can be put on the 8, one I can think of is the MazdaSpeed B-Pillar trim. Would you critisize one for doing that?

Same here... I tried when I painted my Miata's calipers, but they didn't look that smooth. Maybe a dremel or other motorized sanding device would flatten out the surface better...

omg...that would be a PITA...i used plastic model sand paper that i suppose is around 640 grit?? im not sure...but i just removed the left over blue G2 from when I painted them a while back...if you want to sand down to a smooth surface...hmm..that would take more of a grinding wheel with a super steady hand type deal i think...the calipers are cast aluminum alloy..so it would be rather hard to use regular sandpaper...but it would be a much better looking job if it were able to be done...

MikeB...if that question about the Volks was for me...I sold them...i had bought them without tires because I didn't have the money at the time...but then I decided to sell them at my cost to pay off a credit card...wife was harping on me for buying them when we're trying to become "liquid" in our assets...so I sucked up my pride and let some lucky guy in Columbus, GA buy them for what I bought them for...sad but..i'll get some others soon...

it's not as hard as it would seem, i've polished aluminum pieces before. maybe it would be easier to find a high temp primer that would fill in all those crevaces, and then just lay lots of paint on top, sanding between coats.
