So by buying the 8 I'm saving a couple hundred in smogging, parts and labor and other costs. It's a trade-off, I'd rather spend the extra money on a newer car than repair what is an unsellable old clunker and fix it myself later, I do love the old girl tho and she'll make insuring the 8 so much cheaper...
I was in the same position you're in right now when I got my 8. I had a 2000 Eclipse GT that was DEAD. I literally limped it to the dealer praying I would make it all the way there. Your old car really isn't that big of a deal unless you still owe a ton of money on it. If you don't or if it's paid off, you might wanna consider selling it privately as a "mechanic's special".

As for this part, I'm not really too sure, but a few of the guys on my Team used to work in car sales. I'll ask them and see what they think.

Hang tight...

OK Here's what my guys said:

Its not his problem if they make money on him Money down is retarded, don't let him do that. 1500 will get absorbed and won't help him at all, he will just be out 3 months payment. He should take the cash in from his credit union, put that on the table, if they don't like it, walk. RX-8s are usually in good supply at the dealers.

If its a used car (trade in), they probably gave the previous owner 12k, so wholesale crap is just...well crap. I would bet they didn't pay "wholesale" for it, and at 17.5 they are probably making a good penny on him. 17.5 out the door is what I say

Private party value HERE is 16.5k, and trade in is 14k. And we all know how dealers look at KBB trade in so they are probably 12-13k in that car. Find out what trade in on that car is in cali, and figure 5k more is a fair deal. 4k more then trade in is a good deal, and 3k would be great. I paid about 1k more then the car will trade in at, but I had my roll over from the sentra, so they could play with numbers to make it look better.
and

should be easy... if they'll let him walk in this market.. .then it's a good deal... but get financed through his credit union... that is a no brainer, dealership can and will make money on the financing...

bet you they wouldn't take my saturn... 272,000 miles and counting. Actually they might for like 150 bucks and then make 100 giving it to the junkyard. not that I'll get rid of the old girl, makes my insurance 100 bucks cheaper and I plan to rebuild her anyway for fun.
