04 RX-8 Renesis Edition?

Get compression test scores. Without them we will only ever tell you to walk away from that car.
If you want to pursue it anyway that's on you. You asked for our opinion and we gave it to you, a pretty universal negative. Your choice on whether to heed it or not, your responsibility to deal with the consequences of not.

Compression results it is!

Original Turbo 'd Auto !!
It has been pretty much covered already. Stay away from 04-05 automatics if you are actually interested in a fun car and not just the looks. If you absolutely must buy an automatic then at least get an 06+ because they have a 6 speed transmission(04-05 has a 4 speed) so it is much better.
100k AT's could be ok, but you don't really know how it was maintained. low RPM, low load, caused carbon to form quickly in the intake track, and on the spinning Doritos.
This carbon could break free and cause issues with apex seals later on. this would equal a new shortblock. Costing at minimm 2k to replace.

What about something like this that has a engine under warranty and then 122 on the body?
04 Mazda RX8 "Renesis" Automatic

Not really buying it for the speed. I just sold my r6 so I could get a car because I'm tired of the rain every day FL BS lol.
Just need something to take to work every other day and shoot to the store in. Doesn't need to go fast, just need it to look appealing and I like the lowered look of the Rx8s
Was only looking to spend around 6k. And like I said I won't be putting a ton of miles on it. Just something to hit the gym in and stuff like that.
I typically carpool to work

A 4 port AT in that condition will NOT be up to the task of regularly driving you to work. We are really trying to warn you here.
When you add the money that you are going to have to spend to get it reliable, you can start with a better engine that is less prone to breaking down and a car that isn't abused like that. For less. Don't get attracted by the price. You are going to have to spend another 1-2k minimum on that car if you get it.

Allow me to repeat what everyone else has already mentioned. First a question, can you drive a manual? If so that is your best bet. What you think you will be saving by buying an RX8 for 6k or less you will end up frustrated because you are likely to spend almost as much repairing it to get it where it needs to be maintenance wise. If you must have an auto (this is the repetition I spoke of) go with the 06 or better, not only is it a better engine, it will still have some factory engine core warranty provided it has not exceeded the 100k threshold. Lastly no matter what you buy spend the $150 +/- bucks to get a compression test. That one act today can save you a crap load of grief tomorrow. Post the results here and we will let you know if its a good engine or not. These cars are not cheap to maintain period. Don't be like many who come on here and are having problems weeks after the purchase. You were smart enough to research before you purchased, now be smart enough to heed the advice that is being offered to you.

They seller has yet to reply after I told him I would be looking to get compression tests done.
Hopefully a 06 auto turns up that I can afford

2004 and 2005 Automatic transmissions were the 192hp 4-port engine
2006 to 2008 Automatic transmissions were the 212hp 6 port engine
2004 to 2008 Manual transmissions were the 242 hp 6 port engine
The 6 port engines were the same mechanically, just the automatics had the lower redline, hence a drop of 30hp difference from the MTs, since the HP line on a dyno chart keeps climbing from 7,500 up to about 8,600rpm that the ATs can't take advantage of due to the transmission limitations.
Autos also had 1 oil cooler instead of 2 that hurts the ability for it to keep the oil healthy and the engine cool, the automatic transmission coding keeps them in a generally lower RPM vs the manual, leading to lots of over-carbon-caking, and automatics have a general bias of being driven by people that don't really want to get involved in their car as much (just an observation, not a flame) and have a tendency to have been ignored a bit more than manuals. Exceptions are always viable, but it's really something to keep in mind.

Example, 30 miles away from the other:
Cars for Sale: 2004 Mazda RX-8 in Boca Raton, FL 33487: Coupe Details - 328413688 - AutoTrader.com
That's a better shot than the other two, with 15k on the reman. The "custom" wheels is a bit of a joke though, also just black painted OEM wheels.

Uh, honestly? If your bank only approves you for only $5,000, the RX-8 is NOT a car for you. Seriously.
Get something reliable and fuel efficient to use until you have a better financial situation.

It's not "Having to borrow".
It's "my financial situation is so poor that the bank will only approve me for $5,000, and I only have another $2,000 to add on top of that". He is maxing his finances out to get an RX-8 that is already going to be on the low end of the totem pole in terms of quality and reliability. It's a recipe for disaster.
Maybe I'm wrong, but...
