2010 R3 - How's this price?
Guys,
I'm about to join the club!!! I'm looking at an Aurora Blue 2010 R3 with 176 miles on the clock, been used for about 8-10 test drives and been to a car show, from the dealer.
They said that the price for it over winter was 26999, but now that it's spring, the price is back up. Got them to let it go for 26800, before tax, title, license, registration, destination.
Help out a new member here... am I being a little too impulsive? Would this be a good price?
Thanks,
Eric

I know I've stated this before, but I shall state this again.
6 months ago, I negotiated $26,240 (including destination) + TTL & registration, for my brand new 2010 VR RX-8 R3 w/ 212 miles on it.
I'm sure your dealer can do better...

I just went through a pretty extensive search for an R3. I *just* missed the boat on a new 25 mile 2010 Red R3 for $22,999 +TTL. The price had been $25,500 or so until last Friday. I called yesterday and it had sold on Saturday. The dealer is/was Chuck Nicholson GMC Mazda in Ohio. This was, by far, the best deal I could find on a *new* R3.
I tried real hard to buy another Red 2010 R3 from a Mazda dealer in Illinois yesterday and the very best they would do was $26,311+TTL. This same dealer has a new Aurora Blue R3 listed for $25,999+TTL.
There is currently a Red 2009 R3 with 4,900 miles on it at a Mazda dealer in Kentucky that can be had for around $21,000+TTL.
It looks as though the updated factory to dealer incentive is now "up to $4,000" for 2010 RX-8s (I believe it was $3,000 last month), and $1,000 for 2011s so keep this in mind when negotiating and good luck!

^ Whoever took advantage of that $22,999 price drop... Recieved a freakin' incredible deal, lol. Quite simply, wow.
I didn't know Mazda had bumped up the rebate to $4k... It was stuck at $3,500 for the longest time though, haha.

Yea I'll say... holy crap on the $22,999 deal!! The prices are not anything like that around me... the best I could find within 250 miles was the one I bought, they had it listed at $24,995 and wouldn't budge because they said it was competitively priced (which I can't disagree with). It is a 2009 Aurora Blue R3 and had 9,250 miles when I bought it. I also had to drive 3.5 hours each way to get it!
Good luck with your search! Hopefully you get a great deal.
EDIT: I should also mention that mine was Mazda Certified, so I got a pretty kickass warranty on it. I guess this warrants the extra $.

Have a local dealer which has a 2010 R3, Aurora Blue, 180 miles on it. This is the color I really like.
Anyway, sales guy is trying to convince me that $29,000 is a hell of a deal. I started laughing and offered $25,000, hoping tha he will settle for at least 26.
What sort of brain washing strategies are you guys using?

That's simple:
Tell them about this wonderful thing called the internet, and that you know of 5 other cars just like yours a simple phone call away, that you can get for less than what they want for their car, even with the cost of shipping.
They will almost always bite.
If they don't, make the phone call in front of them to the other dealer.
That's usually the final straw, and they then back off their price, since they are about to lose a sale.
BC.

You're on the right track with the pricing you're trying to target, so stay firm on that aspect. They'll be lucky to even get $26k out of you.
They're silly for taking the price that high on you, but that's to be expected since they don't know how prepared you are. As I recently realized that Mazda bumped up the rebate to a whopping $4k... That just plays more to your favor. Have patience and let the pressure fall on their side of the court. As long as they realize that you're ready to pull the trigger on the sale, they'll become cautious on not losing you as their ready client.
As Bladecutter mentioned, keep references of other Mazda dealers who are already much lower on the price. Use them to your favor. Use every piece of resource from all your research and knowledge. Very importantly, understand your other options if this dealer isn't budging for you.
All the best to you.

Don't understand why your dealer is stuck at $29k. They must know that you really like the car, therefore they're using that against you perhaps... That, or maybe all the other '10 R3's are scarce around your area. Regardless, the RX-8 can be a tough sell, so they know that they need to get it off their hands.

The sales guy tells me they have perhaps the last remaining Aurora Blue 2010 model in the north east. He even said two dealers have offered him to trade their Velocity Red for his one Aurora Blue; but that his sales manager has not allowed him to do that.
Well, he may be telling the truth. I was just doing a search, and according to the Mazda USA website, there are only three R3s right now in my area, two of them red and one blue (his).
So it sounds as if they are holding back mostly because of the color. Isn't that crazy? In fact, he told me he could probably let it go for $26,500 if it was a Velocity Red or black. Not sure why color has so much to do with price here So I told him I might just go ahead with the Red, LOL. He said: "hold on, hold on"!!!
Anyway, I told him $29,000 is way too high for a 2010 regardless of color, and asked him about those "rebates" from Mazda USA. He said there are no current rebates, but that he needs to check with his "big boss."
So that's where we stand at the moment.

Actually, I of course did everything you said with the exception of the very last thing. I did not make a phone call in front of the sales guy to other dealerships. That would have been awesome!!!!!!
The sales guy acknowledged these cars are hard to sell, and that at this point it is up to his sales manager. So at least I appreciated his honesty in that respect.
Let's see what happens.

Oh hell, haha!
At least we know that the OP has worked them down to $26,800 + TTL on that specific Aurora Blue R3.
I don't know... I guess you could throw them a final offer of $25,500-$26,000 + TTL, and let them know that you'll take it off their hands right then & right there. If that doesn't work, then you could always raise the stakes another $250-$500, tops. You could simply consider the few addtional hundred dollars your premium for that wicked blue paint that you're after!
Go get 'em tiger! (Now the question is which one of you will be that victorious tiger )

I like the Aurora Blue, but not at any cost. The red is an awesome color.
Funny thing is that I called the other dealerships today that had red ones, and they all said the same thing: "we have so many people interested, if you don't move fast this car might be sold tomorrow."
I say

It'd be extremely exciting to watch you make those few dealers compete for the rock-bottom price.
See, that's the bright side: If you put the color preference aside for the time being, and strictly target the absolute best price... You could end up with one hell of a deal.

In regards to the color, I actually made the mistake during the first day of telling the guy I had been looking for the Aurora Blue color. So I feel he has been using that argument against me. Each time we talk about price he refers back to the color. Yesterday I told him that - even though I like the color - I am not willing to pay just any price for it.
This is awesome!!!! I believe one of these places is going to come up with pretty crazy price drop.
Feels good to have the ball on your court
BTW, how are you liking your R3 so far?

Good luck man! Hop on that blue ASAP, because I just did a search country-wide on Cars.com and found out of around 1500 RX-8s for sale, used and new, 12 were ABM R3s. :O
And I know you weren't asking me, but I love my R3. It handles like a dream, just wait til you drive it without a salesman in it!
EDIT: Is this the one at Compass Motors? Because I was eying that one up before I got mine, because they had a deal about a $5,500 down payment match.

I agree, there are plenty of other Blue ones available on the market.
Sounds like you guys are dealing with Compass Motors, which is the only Blue one in NY.
Just look at cars.com, and you can see the Blue that is available in Chicago.
If it were me, that would be the one I would make a phone call to in front of your dealer there in NY.
Tell the guy that you are in your local dealer, and are willing to buy the car right now if they will sell it to you for that price. If your dealer doesn't budge, then you still save many thousands of dollars, even after you pay to have it shipped to NY.
If the Blues didn't only come in the R3 trim, I would have bought that blue one in IL. Instead, I got a Black Sport 2011 that just rolled into my dealer. For a decent price, of course.
Stick to your guns, and get the car you really want.
There's no point in compromising.
The best thing you can do at this point is tell them you are buying a blue for the price you want from someone else, and follow through with it. Its up to them to either get the sale, and have you buy from them, or to let someone else get your sale, and then they get nothing.

I like it very much. Here's a link to my recent thread which was intended to show my opinions and feelings for the car itself during my 6 months ownership thus far: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/6-months-8k-miles-%7E-10-rx8-r3-213388/
One thing's for sure though... I'm never fully satisfied until I get the opportunity to take my RX-8 to the track. I truly get to appreciate what the car's about over there.
An extremely sporty and athletic car, the RX-8 is.

honestly you guys down in the states are getting a smoking deal for under 30,000 up here in Canada for my 2010 r3 in white I had to pay around 33,000 with the original sticker price of 43,000 plus. So anythin under 30k I would consider a steal because here even though we get a $8,000 mazda rebate I'm Financing and my rate is about 5.6percent which is garbage at 8 years. Plus I put a down payment of 10,000 down negotiating for the car here is extremely difficult unless you were to buy the car out right. Plus I bought it brand new other then those complaints about pricing the car is totally worth the price, wouldn't have any other car and have no regrets.

As I mentioned above, yes...this is the one at Compass Motors. They are really making a big deal about the color of the car. They turned me off big time.
I told them I am going with a red R3 elsewhere. Great deals on those around. Now I am getting emails and phone calls again from them again
I am standing firm on what I want for the price that I want. It adds to the fun of the search. The idea of buying one elsewhere is growing stronger and stronger within me.

See what they can do for price.
Don't forget there's a $4k rebate that the dealer gets for selling it, and let them know that you know about it.
Regardless of what you decide to go for, you know its going to be a great car.

Damn!! Dude, I was in Colorado on vacation last week. That would have been a great time to check that one.
But my best friend lives over there - Denver area - for the right deal I wouldn't mind flying there again, lol.
Good lord, I must have called a triziilion places searching for good deals. One thing I've learned is that it's important not to rush.
