Question attn: all New Jersey rx8 owners

hi all, this is my first message on rx8 forum and i've really learned a lot of things about rx8 from you all.

I'm about to get an rx8 by the end of this month. 6sp and whatever the option that i get a good deal on from the dealer.

before i start I wanted to say I've already read almost all the threads and posts in this forum before joining. Also I "searched" for my question that i'm about to ask but i did not get a clear answer from the previous insurance rate threads.

I am 22 now, will turn 23 this Oct. I have been saving up a lot and am looking to get an rx8 by the end of this month. i've been driving since i was 17, had 2 other MT vehicles previously.

I want to ask you all the NJ resident RX8 owners only, how much you pay for the insurance on this car, especially those that are under 25. and what insurance company do you use?

i know that a lot of insurance companies moved out of NJ so it's pretty hard to find one.

also i found out from my own insurance company yesterday that this car will be listed as a sports car instead of a 4door sedan.

thanks a lot guys

I live in Central Jersey, and have First Trenton Indemnity. I pay ~3400/year for two reasons. First, they categorize the 8 as a High Performance Vehicle, not a sedan as others on the forum have indicated their ins. companies do. Secondly, I never had insurance in my own name before, so there were few companies willing to insure me right away (and I absolutely needed the car after I test drove it. I have NO POINTS, no accidents, and obtained my insurance exactly 1 month before my 25th bday.

BTW, I am in the middle of looking for new coverage, so please pass along any information on any companies who do consider it a sedan, please. Also, from what I hear, NJM is the least expensive, followed by Liberty Mutual, but you (and everyone living in your household) need a clean driving record. Good Luck!

I also live in a low/no crime area, and don't drive to work often. NJ insurance regulations suck.

Well there are a couple of things that will affect your rates.
You married, own a home, have good credit, no tickets, no accidents, no auto ins claims of any kind, how many miles you drive a week, any other drivers of the 8 in the house? Your profile said “North Jersey” where? High auto theft/ damage claims?
I am 37 and have about as clean a record as one can have in Jersey and pay $1,400 a year for 100K/300K $1,000 Deduct with Liberty Mutual. My 8 is also listed as a Sports car but there are different tiers in that class. A Mustang Cobra will cost more than an RX-8 all things being equal. My last car was a 2001 PT Cruiser and the 8 was only $350 for the same coverage. My guess you would be lucky to get Ins. for less than $2,500/year. If you can meet their requirements it’s worth the effort to get NJ Manufacturer.
