Could this deal become better?
Finally found the color that I wanted with the equipment that I wanted....winning blue with all packages except, rotary accent (but can easily add those), also has 6-speed and Nav., CD changer, plus rear spoiler. Dealer said that it's an '05, never titled for $30,195. Isn't MSRP on this car with this equipment like....$35 large? I'm trying to wait until March when I hear that the '06's will be here. You think that the dealer will go lower than the 30 K by then? To be honest I would like to get it for about 25K. Am I being greedy?

I got an 04 Thanksgiving of 04 with that exact setup with all packages. Sticker was $35K something. I got the car for $29K. After seeing what people are paying now, I think I could have gone lower, but I also knew the dealer, so I know I got a damn good price then...but this is now and I think the car isn't as hot or in demand as it used to be, so I think you can push lower for the 05.

However, griffe, if you don't know the full MSRP for that car then you should not buy it. You haven't done your homework. If it is brand-new, never titled the window sticker should be around there someplace. Be sure to check for the two final prices, one is factory MSRP, the other may have dealer add-ons like undercoating or clear-coating or pin-striping or door guards or local market advertising and they'll raise the price another $1,000.
You should also ask for a copy of the vehicle's invoice so you know the true invoice price also. The dealer that sold to me faxed it to me. I have in turn faxed it to other members here so they knew what to look for.
I would say anything lower than "MSRP - 20%" is a great deal on a 2005 right now. There are no 2006s on the lots so you can't expect there to be the same sort of deep, deep discounts that some folks got on 2004s when the 2005s were on the lots and getting old. Mazda corp was giving the dealers uber incentives on those 2004s to get the pricing that low - you can't expect Mazda corp to be doing that on the 2005s yet.
Obviously, you want to get the best price you can, but if you insist on an absurb, low-ball offer with no basis in reality you won't get a car. Remember, the NAV is a $2,000 option. You can't expect to pay the same price as people who bought the same car without NAV (and without CD changer, etc, etc).
djseto, I think you got a great price for Nov 2004 too. From listening to the other members actual purchases I'd say you couldn't have paid much less until Sep 2005. However, waiting 10 months is never a guarantee of a better price - it could have turned out that the 2004s were all gone by then and you'd have been stuck paying more for a 2005 or 2006.

The bottom line is, their cost is invoice minus the hold backs and incentives. <IF> you know what those numbers are you can truly negotiate by trimming their profits down to what you and they can live with. The problem is you never <really> know what these numbers are. But, you can make some educated guesses. Last I read here, (some where), it was mentioned that the hold backs were running about $1500. So a <real> dealer cost is <about> invoice - $1500. Of course there are people doing even better than that from what I've read lately. So, either the hold backs are higher than I think they are, or the dealers are actually selling at a loss to clear inventory.
Anyone here know different?? Thanks!

Dealer said that the car was an '05 but I looked at the radio buttons and there wasn't a "sat" button for satellite radio, instead there was the "am" button which I thought was only offered on '04's. I told him that and he showed me the VIN# which had a "5" instead of a "4" which meant that it was an '05. He said that sat. radio didn't come until middle to late '05? Is that true? The build date of the vehicle was 7/04. A car built in July 2004 and sold as an '05? Do you think it would still have some of the problems of an '04? Much rather have an '05 built in '05. It's sitting on the showroom floor with 12 miles on it. The reason I want an '05 is because of the problems and TSB'S that I read with the '04's and I want to avoid all of that. Aren't the '05's rid of the bugs that plagued to '04's? I asked how long has it been in their inventory, and he avoided the question...I guess he didn't want to give me any bargaining leverage, but I'll get the answer some how. I would get the car, but I don't want any or many of the problems (mechanical wise). I don't know what to do. I might just wait until March (which was my original plan) and let them get some '06's on the lot. Then I may have more bargaining power. Help me out guys. He said the car lists for over 35k, and they'll sell for a little over 30k, but I think they can do better. P.S...I'm trying to get invoice, but I know I have to be Houdini to get it.

If they have something to hide regarding pricing you have a problem.
I could fax my invoice for my car to you so you can brandish it innocently and say, 'my buddy gave me a copy of the invoice for his car that *his* dealership gave to *him* and see, it shows the model year.'
Regarding build dates and model years. My 2004 has a build date on the door sticker of 12/03 and an original invoice date of 12-08-2003. I'm certain it wasn't the first of the 2004 model year to be built. Most manufacturer's model year 2005 cars were first on the lots ~August 2004. That means they were built somewhat before August, especially if they were imports.

OK, I checked edmunds.com for you griffe and based on what you have said so far, I came up with an MSRP of 34,580 with an invoice of 32,033. They (Mazda) are currently offering 1500 cash back, so if they are saying just over 30k, if that is before the $1500, then it is a very good deal, you might be able to do better, but that would be a good price with all of those options on the car. If the 30k includes the $1500, then the deal could be better, but chances are the dealer would be less likely to cut a super good one on the car since it has so many options.
The fact that the build date is 07/04 just means it was one of the first ones off the line, but still an 05. Do a search on the forum, Zoom has an excellent summary of when the cut ins for the TSB and changes were done, and have the dealer do all of them before they deliver the car, also ask for a new battery and the latest Nav software, may have to fight them a little but they should do it. Once all of that is done, go easy on it for the first 1k miles and then enjoy.

The salesman said, "$30,195 with all applicable incentives and rebates." That's one reason I feel that they can do better. I know about the $1500 cash back and of course he didn't offer that tidbit of knowledge. He still hasn't told me how long they have had it in their inventory. Oh yessireee if I get it, all TSB's will be done. Why a new battery? I read somewhere in the forum about flashing new software to prevent flooding? He also said that MSRP was $35,715. I tried to configure, but couldn't get that number...maybe it's some "junk" that they added to it...like weather proofing and the ability to make diamonds.

Here is how the invoice looked when it was faxed to me:
.................................................I nvoice Amt....Retail Amt
RX8 6P......................................$24,659... ......$26,680
In-Dash 6-CD Changer.............$400..............$500
Cargo Tray................................$40........... .....$50
Carpet Floor Mats.....................$0..................$0
Portfolio....................................$0... ...............$0
Moonroof Wind Deflector...........$36...............$45
Navigation System....................$1721............$2000
Rear Wing Spoiler.....................$285..............$355
Alarm Shock Sensor Upgrade....$48................$60
Spare Tire Kit.............................$320.............$ 395
Wheel Locks..............................$0............. ....$0
Touring Package M/T.................$2409...........$2800
Appearance Package.................$775.............$970
Transportation $520 $520
Baltimore Assessment $100
Total: $31,313 $34,375
Then the magic words written in the margin:
$31,313
-$4,000 Dealer Cash
- $534 Holdback
Sale for $26,779
NY Sale - $25,995
I have no idea why they dropped from $26,779 to $25,995 - they must have thrown in more trunk money. I didn't finance through MAC and I don't think the $1500 applied to those 2004s because they had the other $4000 from Mazda.
![Dunno](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/dunno.gif)
Regarding the higher than $34k pricing you said he claimed was the MSRP: My car had a 2nd window sticker to the right of the large, main new-car window sticker. It listed 'Paint-Prep Lustre Coat, Custom Pin Striping and Door Edge Guards' as dealer-added equipment it drove the Total Sales Price to $35,365. The manufacturer's invoice sheet won't show the dealer-added equipment so you'll see the *real* MSRP. His higher price is not MSRP it is 'Dealers Final Selling Price' or 'Total Sales Price'.

This dealer is trying to hold on to a car that he's having a tough time selling. I think it's safe to assume that's it's been on his lot for at least 12 months. Not only has this particular 8 not sold, but there are several others that are just sitting there. Someone mentioned that he might not want to deal with a car that has so much eq., but he may have to in order to get rid of it. I think that I will go with the original plan and wait until March although I love the RX8, I don't like this bargaining process and playing games. I want to see him sweat when he has '05's and now '06's on his lot. I was thinking about going by there again today...but I don't want to seem desperate. Thanks to everyone for their input, especially you, Cool Blue Dad...I appreciate it very much. I'll keep you posted on my progress. I hope the dealer gets frustrated and says, "OK Dang! make me an offer!"

Glad to help. Buying a car is a big purchasing decision and usually a big hassle.
If he's really playing games you don't want to buy there anyway. Vote with your dollar - try searching around on cars.com. If you want TiGrey or Sunlight Silver those are the most common and you should find some within a few hours drive. If you expand your search that far you should find a more straight-forward dealer.
Dude, you're the buyer. You've got the money. You don't have to take cr@p from anyone.
One more insiprational story - Last weekend I was trying to buy a Vibe for my wife. A used car lot had a 2005 with 10,000 miles on it. The sales lady offered me full 2006 invoice price for it and we left without another word. I ignored her follow-up calls for a few days then called her back and told her (politrely, but clearly) what I expected to pay for last year's model with 1/3 of the warrenty gone and she agreed to look around for something that met my price point. If she doesn't give me what I want we won't do business together. There are a lot of cars for sale within a 200 mile radius.
