A few questions about buying an 09
First, let me thank you all for the great information here! I've had loads of questions answered, particularly by the FAQs, specs and year-by-year changes posts.
It is time for a new car for me :> For background: I need a back seat, I'd like something that is pretty to look at, and I'd like to run the season with my local autocross club. I've narrowed down my choices to an RX-8, an M3 or a 2011 Mustang GT. Yes, vastly different cars...I know! The RX-8 is currently at the top of my list. My previous FUN car was an 87 MR2. Underpowered, but fantastic handling - it was also my introduction to autocrossing (which I have not done for many years). Based on my past history, if I like the car as much as I think I will, there is a good chance I will keep the car for a long time, so I'm looking for something with low miles.
Currently I'm looking for an 09 R3. The 09 part is based on the improvements that were rolled into that model. The R3 because of the handling improvements. Oh yeah, and because it came in blue
My first question - I wanted to confirm what I've read in other posts here - Is it correct that a blue 09 must be an R3? I've seen several listings for them - but none are labeled as R3s. I'm hoping this is simply because the seller doesn't know RX-8s well enough to know that this is important.
Second question - What is the general consensus on a good price for an 09 R3 with 10-20k miles? I saw a recent post where a dealer was selling '10 R3s for ~$25k. Based on that, I would think an 09 with 10-20km should be down around $20k?
Third - I drove an 09 sport yesterday at a dealer. This was my first test drive and it was everything I expected. However, this particular specimen concerned me. The back cover of the rear seats were missing - you could see the seat foam from the trunk. Anyone know why someone would do that? Also, both windows made grinding noises going up and down - like tiny rocks/debris was in the window mechanism somewhere. Is this a common problem? There were several other items that made me think that this car had not had an easy life, so I'll be passing on that one.
TIA!
Chris

I can assure you you're going to like this car, specially if you are concerned about handling and you've done AutoX.
Going with an 09- is a good decision based on the reliability improvements.
Regarding the car you test drove I would say "pass"....
Let us know what you end up getting and good luck!
