General insurance question: Fathers READ!!!

This is just a general insurance question. I am 18 years old, and my insurance is under my father's name... so this is why i'm asking. I'm not too sure how this works...

One day at a parking lot, i was parked next to car "x". I guess the driver of the car did not have a car next to them, so the genius cranked the steering wheel all the way to the right and decided to back out. "Luckily" for me, car "x" scraped the entire side of my car... The damage isn't too bad, but on the passenger door, you can see 3 BUMP points where the crash protection bars are, and i managed to get 90% of all the scrapes out with my gs27 scratch remover. That stuff is great... SO, i went to the body shop, and they said.. roughly -- $1200...

I'm just curious, these are my two options. I will work over the summer to earn the money to pay off the damages, OR i will ask my father to file an accident report for my insurance... IF i ask my Father to file an insurance claim, will my premium go up? If so, why would the insurance go up since it was NOT my fault? I coudln't help if an idiot decided to scrape my car with their bumper and inability to drive... What should i do? I guess i'm asking the FATHERS of the forum out there....

thank you for your help!!

If you filed a police report and in the report it states that the other person admitted fault, then you should have no problem making a claim. Your premium should not go up as the money is not coming from your own insurance on your car, but from his/her liability. I'm not sure, but in some cases you may have to go to your policy first and then your company collects from their company. I'm not an expert on the technicalities, but if the other person admits fault, make 'em pay, just try to find a lower estimate first. It's just polite to try to lesser the blow on them.

I had one accident when I was under my fathers insurance and when I went to apply for my own insurance they checked my record and said that the accident that I had was claimed under my fathers name and would therefor not affect my price. I do not know about if your premium would go up or not. Just have him call the insurance and ask them and say something like we are not reporting it nor claiming it at this time, but the other guy is being a POS and not being responsible and just wanted to find out if the premium would go up etc...

I can only speak about what happened to us and I live in the great state for auto Insurance New Jersey but our Insurance went up about $300 after my wife was involved in a no-fault accident. But from the companies point of view they didn’t raise our rates we just no longer qualified for a discount. I use liberty Mutual and have a 1995 Ford P/U with 150,000 miles, 2002 GMC Envoy and the RX-8. We carry 100/300 liability, comp and collision (yes on the 1995 P/U) I only drive the P/U about 5,000 miles a year but since we have collision on all three we get a discounted rate for collision. If I were to just have basic on the P/U I lose the discount and pay regular price for collision on the other two, which in the end would cost more.
Now up until Jan this year no one had any type of accident in the last 5 years and we qualified for a group that got a discount. Now that we don’t qualify for that group we don’t get the lower rate. Bottom line we are paying more for getting involved in a no fault accident. Your company could have the same thing. Still $3,200 a year for full coverage on three vehicles in New Jersey is not too bad.

If it's not your fault then the rates should not go up.

it's hard to say, some will raise your rates if you start claiming against it.

my amex insurance will not raise the rates unless i claim over 2 accidents against it, but they were unable to specifiy within what time period. So it could be 2 claims in 1 year, or 2 claims in 10 years.. I'll have to ask them again sometime to find out.

No complaints so far, but all they've done is take my money - I haven't filed any claims.

I ran in to alomost this exact problem. I had two accidents that were not my fault, one I had the other persons insurance, the other was a parking lot hit like you had. I made the mistake of telling my insurance about both. When it came time to renew my insurance I had a pretty decent rate hike. Their reasoning behind it was I had two 'reported' accidents. Although neither were my fault and for one they didn't even have to pay out any money my rates still went up. It all depends on how much your deductable is compared to the $1200 if it will make any sense to file a claim.
