That depends on your previous record. My insurance company (Geico) has a 5 year good driving program and they will ignore your first ticket if you're a good driver.

However, I will strongly suggest that you take the traffic school. I've been to traffic school in AZ and it is one of the most incredibly boring experiences of my life. However, CA has numerous on-line traffic schools that you can complete in a couple of hours from your home. I used http://www.trafficschoolonline.com/. They structure it so you have to read 9 pages of information, then take a section quiz. You do that for each of 5 sections. Then you take the final exam.

Here's the thing though. It's on the Internet. You don't actually have to read the 9 pages of information. You save the pages and open the quiz. You look up the answers as you take it. The section quizzes are untimed and the final exam is 40 questions in 3 hours--you have plenty of time to look up every answer.
