KBB trade in value, how close are they??

Hi everyone!! I am going after work to get an RX8, and I am so EXCITED!!! I have loved this car since before it came out!! now I am actually going to get one!!! but there is one last thing that could break the deal!!

my trade in!! I currently have a 2005 scion TC, and Kelly Blue book said that the trade in value on my car is 13,900. Is KBB usually right when it comes to these kind of figures?? I just dont want to get hosed on my trade in thats all

thanks

Most dealers will only offer you wholesale trade in, the price they get for dumping your car at an auto auction. They still might sell a TC on the lot for KBB if not more. First get your best price on the 8 without the trade-in. Since the RX-8 is not in big demand I would make trade-in price a deal breaker. Firmly insist on $13,900 and walk out when they say no. Or any money below KBB trade-in should be taking off the best price you got on the 8. Do not at any point give up the keys to your TC. If they say they need to drive in around the back you go with them and take control of the TC before you talk price again. If they want to sell you the 8 they will chase you down and make a counter offer. If they offer $13,500 or more make the deal. The key to this is you must be able to walk out of the dealership and not buy the 8 from them.

i you really have to trade in than find a carmax around you and get it priced there .. good thing is they gice you a written offer which then you can present to the dealer you trade with to get him to go up .. and if he doesnt dump it at carmax

but honestly man .. tc should be too hard to sell on the street .. save yourself couple thou .. i dumped my protege5 in less then a week

I just upgraded from tC to RX-8 also. My advise? Sell the tC yourself, don't trade in. I got 15K for mine private party. Dealer would have offered me 12-13K.

I had a PT Cruiser in perfect shape, KBB was around $7,900. When I went to the dealer I took my F-150 beater so they could do the keep you trapped at the dealer trick. When they turned me down I left. They chased me down in the lot and offered $7,500 on the PT if it was in as good a shape as I said it was. The funny thing was they made me sign a piece of paper that said the PT was worth $5,500 (wholesale) but they were still giving me $7,500 off the RX-8. I found that funny but I was getting close to what I wanted so I didn’t bitch about the doc I signed. By the way they sold my PT off the lot in less than a week.

Go to edmunds.com and look up the value of your car. They give dealer buy price, private sale price and dealer sell price.

With those three you should have a good idea. The numbers are also locally adjusted, so should give you a better idea of the actual value of the vehicle.

What exactly does that mean? The market is what someone is willing to pay for it. So it can't mean wholesale (as in auction pricing). Therefore, you're saying your dealer gives somewhere between wholesale and retail on trades?

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man this car is SWEET!!! the dealer actually paid more then KBB for my trade-in!! and that is suprising to me!! My car was a 2005 Scion TC with 23100 miles on it, it had a cracked windshield and a scrached rim on it also!! and on KBB a car like mine in good condtion was 13900, and the dealer gave me 14000 for it. so I am happy with that!! I am just glad to finally have my 8!!!

If a dealer gives you more money for your trade in than the car is worth, it just means you <could> have bought the car for less than the price you negotiated. As someone said earlier, always negotiate a cash price, then mention any financing or trade in. If you don't the dealer will use all the numbers (sale price, financing & trade in), to confuse you to the point you have no idea what you're <really> paying for the car, getting for the trade in, or paying for the financing.

I got rid of mine cause the handling wasn't what I wanted it to be, and rather than mod it to try to make it something it just wasn't ever gonna be, I'd put that money into a new car that is what I want it to be from the get-go. That's just me though. I can't speak for him.

well the Scion TC was great car for what it is, but I didnt want 2 car payments, nor did I have the room in my garage for a 3rd car. The other car in the garage is my roomates Jeep. and since I wasnt upsidedown in the TC, I thought what the hey, lets get the car I have wanted for over 3 years but couldn't really afford it until now
