Question Money Squeez?

I did a little bit of shopping when I decided to buy an 8. There were 2 dealerships around, one which couldn’t get close to the carsdirect.com price or the consumer reports invoice price and one which was a little under (after a ton of bargaining). We settled on a Titanium Grey, GT, Nav, Auto for $29,750 (the sticker was $33,000 and the carsdirect.com price was 30,125). They said they would have no problem locating and obtaining one within the week (7 days will end on 5/5). They called me in the mean time and said we have your car but there is an extra option on it. It includes the spare tire and it would be $350 + tax, on top of the price they quoted me. I would have less of a problem spending 350 on a spare tire if it was going to stay in my car but I plan to throw subs in the trunk, so the tire would end up sitting in the garage. I told them great I’ll come in to pick up the car, and to just take the tire out. They said "We can't do that because we don’t modify vehicles options, we keep them the same as they come from Mazda" they also said “we don’t keep parts in stock”. Mind you it’s not like they have to remove an appearance package, it’s like 2 screws and they could just add it in another car. Then I told them that I would take the tire and the car but only for the original price quoted. They obviously didn't go for that. So they said then they would have to keep looking for the exact car I specified somewhere else. The dealership already charged me an extra enexpected $160 for title fees (which just means that they will get the car’s registration at DMV for me, because I have the plates already). Is this dealership just trying to squeeze more money out of me, or should I not be so stingy and just give in to the unexpected $350? How hard are RX-8’s to come by? They claim they are having a hard time because I got a “great” price on the car and no dealership wants to give up a car for that, how does the dealership shipping the car to my dealer get paid and is it a percentage based on the price I got the car for? Is there somewhere I can search the dealerships in my area to see if I can find the car myself?

Find another dealer close by and show them the negotiated price and ask if they want your business and if they will find your car for you.

I smell a squeeze. In those instances, I ask the sales manager if they are trying to queer a deal over $350, because you can go to another dealer and get exactly what you want for the agreed to price. The line about no other dealer giving up that car for that price is B.S. You are no where close to dealer cost on that price.

It is the beginning of the month. If you can afford to wait, watch what happens in the last week of May...

Good luck,
Pk
