Ordering an 8

Ordering an 8
I am curious how this is done. When I bought my 8, I just went in and picked the one that had the features I wanted (Sport package) and the color I wanted. I had them put on a spoiler, but they charged me about $300 to do it because it was not originally on the car.
I didn't know you could custom order a car. How is this done? I'd have liked that because the spoiler would have been put on at the factory - and the paint would have exactly MATCHED (mine doesn't quite, but pretty close) - and there wouldn't have been 30 miles on it at time of purchase. It would have been all me.
How long does the wait usually last? Does it cost more to special order like this?
I guess it's too late now, but I'll know for next time.

Ordering isn't very difficult actually.
Dealers of course don't care for it as much b/c they'd rather sell you a car right then and there... My dealer was offering to start swapping out all kinds of parts to make their car match my request. Quite funny actually.
Pretty much all that is involved is you sit down with the sales guy and they take out a Purchase Order where you select exactly what you want / don't want. At that point they'll give you a price and ask for a small deposit to process the order. (deposits vary. I didn't even have to leave one)
The average wait time is approx. 2 - 3 months for the vehicle. Some members here experienced MUCH longer delays do to being pre-orders or because of the fire at the plant in Japan. Mine was ordered May 9th and should be in Mid July.
Believe it or not, no additional costs are involved in the ordering of a vehicle. There is however one MAJOR drawback! You sit here and count down the days until yours arrives. It's BRUTAL posting on this forum and knowing that mine isn't even here yet. :p

Accessories are painted seperately from the car and added on at some point in the assembly process. They'll paint hundreds of spoilers and body kits at a time seperate from chassis painting. Some of those accessories will be shipped off to dealers or stored in warehouses as spares and the rest will go to the line to eventually mate up with a chassis. But they were painted in different paint batches and are no more or less likely to match the paint than the one you bought at the dealer.

Really. That does make me feel better. I once got in an accident and took the car to a body shop, and they did a MUCH better job of color-matching. The guy was really perfectionistic - he called me and told me the color didn't quite match, and I freaked, but when I went to go see it...man, even when I was staring at it, I couldn't tell. With this spoiler, I can definitely tell. It looks more pink, which annoys me. However, I already had them repaint it once (the first time they did a terrible job...spots were actually missing paint!), and I don't want the hassle of complaining again. I think I can deal..just gots to chill!
