Purchasing TIPS/INFO

Hey everyone, Great forum I just became a member.

Now I am purchasing an rx8 this May and I wanted to know what kind of ammunition I could gather from other who recently purchased their car. I am interested in knowing the invoice price that the dealer pays for a 6 speed Grand touring pkg, rotary accents, and floor mats. The retail online comes to $31,399. Also, what did you guys pay for your cars?? how much are the dealers willing to move from the retail price? and finally what suggestions do any of you have for me when I enter the dealer to make it all go down?

I really appreciate any feed back you are willing to offer. Oh and finally I will be purchasing the car in upstate NY if that has an impact on what you have to tell me.

Thanks for the input!!!

Second that motion. Over many years I have gotten deals that improved immensely after walking out. Sometimes not the same day. My local dealer has over 40 RX-8's instock and I paid $1700 under MSRP. I think I could have done much better had I been more patient. I was much more patient in the past because I didn't much give a damn whether I got the car in question or another one down the road. This time the dealer and I both knew I was way far gone on this car.

I know it's gonna make some people upset, but I really wish I had negotiated different tires, there was a tire shop right next door...stupid!!!
The only time I had Bridgstones was in a pinch on my Stealth, 15,000 mi later the sidewall blew out- they're weak in the walls. I know in the 8, the tire has a sloppy folding feeling on sharp turns, instead of a solid powerslide feel.

First, define exactly what car you want. Color, options etc.

Second, check to see if you employer is eligible for the Ford Partners Program. If so, you can get the car for dealer invoice or very close to it. That will be closer to $3,000 below MSRP.

Third, complete a request for your car choice with Autobytel.com and CarsDirect.com online. I can almost guarantee you this will do better for you than only 1700 under MSRP. I received a quote for $800 over invoice with 36 hours of my inquiry with CarsDirect.

Fourth, get all these quotes that you can and then visit your local dealer (assuming the autobytel or carsdirect dealers are a little further away).

Good Luck

Look through the price and financing threads. The worst you should be paying is invoice or just over. Many have gotten well under... and no, as has been mentioned here before, you aren't making them "loose" money by doing so. The dealer "gets" the car at invoice and receives thousands in kick-backs from the factory. So what they pay NET is less than invoice. Remember that. The dealer is also not buying the car for full price upfront in cash... it's financed and that is subsidized by the factory.

So go in there aiming to pay no more than invoice for the car and all options. Try this site... http://www.carbuyingtips.com/ very good info. Good luck!

I think you have 2 good options- buy right NOW! Before the end of this month- February is the best month to buy (statistically) becuase in the cold and snow- ( I went to Syracuse U so I know snow) people dont want to buy cars. Also before the end of the month is good bacuase the dealer will have to pay another month of finance - or get less holdback.

Get on mazda's site, and check dealer inventory- find the car you want- call the dealer - even if far away- you can always just get it serviced locally. Get the invoice off of edmunds, etc, Call that dealer- ask for the internet sales dept., tell them the vin # you want and say most dealers are at invoice or under- what's the best you'll do to sell this car today. If they offer invoice, say well that sounds like an ok deal, but I was really hoping to be under invoice, thank you for your time, and hang up. DO that to next dealer, and see how far you get. I only had one choice of car in the exact config in the whole NY city area, so my choices were limited- unless I wanted extra features- which I didn't.

ALso I was looking for the very freshest car I could get (since I had an early 8 - did the buyback, and wanted something with better MPG) My dec built model is better than my 1st one- MPG seems better- but I'm just at th ebottom on my first tank of gas, driving it really easy during break in, so we'll see in a few tanks where I'm at. I ended up paying $200 over invoice at perhaps the most expensive dealer in the country- they often get full MSRP. I negotiated $350 under invoice at another dealer for a car navigation- and it was a great deal - till I found out how long the car had been on thier lot- and was built 6 months ago. SO I paid a little extra for what I wanted ( a fresh off the boat Titanium GT with nothing else and zero miles - 2. something actually)

ALso calling Mazda with a Vin #, they will tell you when it was built.- I Called them and asked about 3 different VINs.
Also just becuase a car you want isn't in the computer, doesn't mean they don't have soemthing similar- or one coming in in a few weeks, or may swap with another dealer... so try that a 2nd line of finding the car you are interested in.

OPTION #2- wait till summer to buy. SOmeone here who works for a dealer I belive said there will be factory rebates or incentives this summer since the car isn't selling as well as they hoped.

I personally think they will be selling very well this spring- I am starting to see lots of 8's here in NYC. Once people begin seeing it on the road, the realize the car is out- not everyone follows cars and dont read the mags. The better they sell, the less dealers will come down. Right now it's a total buyers market. The spring is when most people look to buy a car- in the nice weather ready for summer. Me- I like to buy in the middle of a snow storm when the dealers are glad just to have anyone in the door.

I picked up a 6MT, GT package, rear spoiler, and rotary accents for 28,628, which is about $3000 off MSRP. Plus, I got blue book on my trade, so I walked away a very happy new "8" owner.

Not sure how much longer it'll be offered, but Mazda is offering a dealer rebate of $1500. I believe this means that a dealer can sell at invoice and still make $1500! I haven't bought one yet but have visited a few dealers. Yesterday (2-21-04), I was able to get the dealership in Modesto, CA to go down to invoice but they still had a destination charge ($520) in there that I wasn't to keen on. Plus, they didn't have the exact model I wanted so I left. I expect their phone call(s) soon. There's another dealer in San Jose, CA that is offering the College Grad rebate in addition to the dealer rebate and they said they had 40 of them in stock. Time for a road trip!

Its funny reading some of this post, being Im a salesman and I work at the dealership

Some of you guys, are reading and watching too much movies.

First let me tell you this, if you are not in a rush, wait till summer.. there will be tons of rebates available for Rx8. Mazda has done this all the time with their cars, anything to boost up sales.

Second, There is no rebate or dealer rebate right now. That could change though. Most dealers are selling at dealer invoice, making just enough for holdback. If you want a good price, try to aim for dealer invoice at least. IF you get under, thats even better but it all depends on which dealer is willing to cut into their hold back first and most.

Third, there is no strategic tip, such as someone stated.. GEt up 3-4 times.. that is just old style sales. Nowadays, if you buy, you buy. If you dont, you dont. plain and simple, usually you can get a dealers bottom line just by asking for a price. Its all about trust, and I assure you , you can tell a person just by looking at him.

Research online and find out the bottom line price. Remember , Dealers have the right to earn a profit. They are not buying an Rx8 for 10 bucks and selling you for 10 bucks. They need and will make profit

Be reasonable and they will be reasonable to you.

If you want, I can assist you too. Just let me know. Good luck, you will love the car
