Rude salesman at Anaheim Mazda, CA

I emailed Anaheim Mazda offering for an 8 at 300 below MSRP and this is what he replied. Note that when emailing, I wrote how much the dealer is profiting and I used the best of manners.

Here is his reply:

THANK YOU FOR YOUR INQUIRE ON RX8 BUT I WILL HAVE TO PASS ON YOUR OFFER. I DO HAVE THIS UNIT AVAILABLE AS YOU WANT EQUIPPED BUT MY PRICE IS $27,500.00 (MSRP)PLUS TAX/LIC FEES. WHILE YOU MAY THINK PAYING THE STICKER PRICE AND THE DEALER MAKING THAT PROFIT, REMEMBER WE DO HAVE TO PAY FOR OUR BUILDING AND THINGS LIKE LIGHTS, WATER, UP KEEP AND PAY OUR EMPLOYEES WHO NEED TO MAKE A DECENT WAGE SO THEY LIKE YOU CAN AFFORD TO PURCHASE THEIR OWN RX8 IF THEY SO DESIRE. WE DO ALSO NEED TO HAVE SOME KIND OF "NET" PROFIT SO WE COULD STILL BE IN BUSINESS IN THE FUTURE. ALSO THINK OF ALL THE OTHER MODELS THAT WE SELL FOR JUST A FEW $$$ PROFIT YET STILL HAVE THESE SAME OVERALL EXPENSES.

W. KORY JOHNSON
GENERAL SALES MGR.
ANAHEIM MAZDA

I felt that this reply is very unprofessional. Him being a sales manager should relate to his customers. I'm sure everyone wants to get a good deal and I'm sure if he was the buyer he would want a discount for the car. If he couldn't sell me below MSRP, he should just replying saying he can not accept my offer. Instead he replies and flames me for even trying to ask. I will definitely not doing business with this dealership again.

Let's 1st critique your original letter to him. Sounds like he wasn't to happy with you "laying down the law". Unprofessional, it's a dealership after all, they are there to "bend you over" if you allow them. Unfortunately, buying a car is a game, so if you don't like how one dealership is "playing", go find another.

Well, I got my 8 from Anahiem Mazda. My winning blue 8 is their first 8, so they treated me pretty nice. I have to pay at MSRP, cuz it was 1st alloc pre-order. Kory was the one doing the paper work for me. (There's another sales tested drive the car with me) My impression of Kory is not bad. He's a funny and friendly guy. (Although he drives G35C, that doesn't mean he's bad guy :D) Anyways, sorry to hear about your experience with anahiem mazda. My experience with them is totally different. I'm very satisfied with their service. sohcpunk, good luck on your 8 search. Wish you have a better experience with other dealers.

it is unfair of you to want us to form an opinion of his answer without including your original email. his point is valid even if you don't like the phrasology.

Agree, sohcpunk, post your original email here just to be fair.

My thoughts: Your offer of $300 below MSRP was a fair and reasonable offer. If they don't want to accept it, they should have said "Thank you for your offer. At this time, we are selling RX-8's at MSRP. We would like to have the chance to earn your business. Please come in and talk to us at your convenience."

All that crap they said about keeping the lights on, selling other models, etc was unnecessary, unprofessional, disingenuous, and condescending (in other words, I agree with you.) They don't have to accept your offer, but on the other hand they don't have to talk down to you and he was laying on the BS pretty thick in his reply. Besides his bad grammer and stuck CAP LOCKS key which in itself is bad etiquette, all-in-all it was a very unprofessional reply. Now, let us see what you sent him! And no cheating/editing, you gotta be honest with us.

Now, if they have the exact car you want in stock my recommendation is go by the darn car. It's much too fun for you to be missing out for a measly $300. If you buy now, do you still qualify for the $500 debit card and free maintenance? If so, you still come out ahead.

I used an email created by a user on this board "RX-8 2004" Its just a standard email to request dealers online for their price quote. BTW, after looking at the numbers, it was $500 below MSRP, I probably wasn't thinking right on the previous post. Here it is:

I am looking for the best possible price on a New Mazda RX-8, Titanium Grey/Black cloth interior, Automatic with AT Sport Package.

Here is what I know about the RX-8

Invoice Mazda RX-8 with AT Sport Package & Destination = $25,343
Hold Back 3% of Base MSRP $26,980 (does not include destination) = $809
Dealer Cost = Approx. $24,534

I know you are in business and need to make a profit. But at the sticker price of $27,500, profit is approx. $2,966. That is a little more than I expect to pay. I would like to ask you for your best possible price you would be willing to sell me a Mazda RX-8 for. I am offering $27,000 plus taxes and tags for an ordered or On the Lot Titanium Grey Mazda RX-8 with AT Sport Package. I can visit your dealership tomorrow to finish the deal and put money down, if you say you can do this price.

Thank you for your time and efforts in advance.

Haven't replied to his email yet. I don't want to deal with them anymore. About the $500 rebate and free maintanence, I was at another dealer, and he salesman said it is only being offered to the buyers that purchased the 8 before August 28th. Can anyone confirm on that?

I think the date was Aug. 26th, but otherwise that is correct. You had to purchase or at least order the car by that date.

I found out the dealers were allowed by Mazda to offer walk-in customers the maint/$500 deal for purchases on Aug 27 & 28. If I remember what I was told correctly, they were informed on the Aug 25th conference call they had two extra days to include the incentive.

No doubt that those extra two days were to allow dealers time to paste new or updated window stickers in all their existing RX-8s....

Guys, this is a mass-produced car (~ 30,000 a year)!!! Here in New Jersey, there are plenty available. You should be able to get a $1,000 UNDER sticker fairly easily.

I got the EVO for $862 UNDER sticker plus a free year of mainteance (~ $400) fourm months after it came out. It would have been lower if I was more flexible on colors and options. They only produce 6,500 of them a year.

I think the reason its is easily available in New Jersey is that not many people wnat to purchase a summer car. This car is not made to drive in snow so basically people want an all season car instead. Unfortunately, here in California, the weather is pretty much dry so there is a big demand for the RX-8s. You would be lucky to find an RX-8 below MSRP.
