RX-8 Demo to buy or not to buy

Maybe someone can give me some advice. At a dealership where I live they are selling there RX-8 demo car. It is velocity red with the GT package and rotary accent package. MSRP 31,239 They are asking 27,000 plus tax and license. It has around 1100 miles on it.

Not sure if I want a car that countless other people have drove.

Looking for advice so let me know what you guys think.

While it's hard to gauge resale so early in the game, I would push for a much better price. That kind of deal is what I would expect on a fresh unit with hard negotiating. Get the invoice prices off of Edmunds.com to gauge yourself. I think we need to get 10% below invoice to get the game started. If the money is not that important, go for a new one.

According to Edmunds, invoice on this car is $28,731, which puts geffy's deal at $1,700+ below invoice. I'm not aware of anyone getting that much below invoice on a new 8. Obviously the situation differs by region, but my dealer walked me out the door after I offered $29,800 on the same configuration minus the rotary accents.

If it's the color, package, etc. you want, I'd go for it at 500-1000 below what the the dealer offered. Any problems you might have from the engine not being properly broken in should come up within the warrany period. If you can get 'em down to $26K, that's $4K less than I couldn't get...

*shrug* i'm a thrifty person... 1100 miles is a whole lot of hard-driven demo miles, so the gearbox might be a little suspect, but you still get the full warranty, no?? (as in, the first 1100 miles of the warranty aren't used up)

i dunno, if you're worried about the car breaking, buy it and break it a la our friend Rikki. :D

My preorder was delayed quite a while. So, when the sales manager got his demo, I told him I wanted to buy it. He said that once a car is registered with DMV as a demonstrator, it cannot be sold for 6 months. Since the first RX-8 was delivered in July, it can't be a real demo - it's most likely a returned car. It may have problems.

I would never buy a demo car. If I buy new, I buy new. 20 or less miles

The car is definately a demo. I have seen it there since it was driven off the truck. It hasn't been owned by anyone else but like many of you have said driven hard for that many miles just doesn't sound good.

If the car is actually classed as a demo, the warranty could have started from 0.

I would call mazda about this first, and get clarificiation on the vehicle from the dealer. Maybe get the vin and call mazda about it just in case there's any issues

Let me know if this sounds like a good deal. I asking the dealer for a price on ordering a sunlight silver (not sure on the color but it doesn't matter for now) with the GT package and the Nav. He said he could do it for 31,399 plus tax and license (MSRP 33,200). Is this comparable to what many of you have paid or not. Personally I think it is still plenty because the way I figure he is still making around 1200 on a easy transaction with little or no overhead.

I don't know about buying a demo. Do you remember how you test drove your 1st 8? Remember how the salesman drove it?

On my test drive the salesman hit a dip in the road at 65mph to show me "how the car doesn't bottom out". He also told me that he averages 5 test drives a day (the test drive took about 40 minutes). He also admitted that the car VERY RARELY saw 5th gear, even on the freeway portion of the drive.

He then told me at the end of the drive that the demo we were driving was on sale and he could work a hell of a deal on it.

IMHO, I would never buy a demo after that experience.

Just think about that frame of mind you were in while driving the demo or a rental car for that matter.

I got my 8 for S Plan price and wouldn't sacrifice $$$ for a demo.

so do you guys really think those edmunds listed invoice price is really how much the dealers paid? so invoice of a base 6-speed is ~24.7k, and w/ msrp being 27.2k, they would make a profit of ~$2500 on a base model sold at msrp. i'm always a bit suspect that that's how much they make off a car. and there are times when they claim they sell at "below invoice," and i just can't believe that 'cuz a) they're a bunch of liars and b) just can't see them sell at a loss, especially car dealers. perhaps the invoice is how much manfuacturers list the price but different dealers get different discounts when they purchase cars?

as for the demo car, i doubt the dealers take good care of their demos besides keeping them clean, and most of those salesmen are car-idiots and probably thrash and abuse them, but then again, someone has to rescue these poor RX-8's from the dealers and even more car-idiots :D personally, i'd make sure i get an absolute killer of a deal on them, including extended warranty. car dealers are scums..mostly. it's like selling rental cars, i see used rental fleet explorer's on enterprise's lot for sale for 30k and i think that's just wrong, even though they're only like 1 or 2 years old

I just test drove the rx-8 and the salesperson was trying to show me what the car "can" do. he turned off the dsc, thrust the gas pedal, and released the clutch quickly, causing the tires to be spinning.

it was great fun and all, but the car only had about 200 something miles, and i don't think it's good for the engine if he kept doing it. actually, he did it twice. hmm, something to think about?

anyway, i decided to buy a brand new black rx-8 with the sports package for $25,500 (i kid you not), and i am getting $500 rebate as a recent graduate, so figure the math. another dealer told me he could do better than that, but hasn't gotten to me back with his offer. so....

Dealers will get discounts for preordering before the car comes out. Ordering LARGE quantities, etc.

But otherwise, its very possible the dealership paid invoice for the car.
