rx8 vs Predecessor (RX7)

rx8 vs Predecessor (RX7)
I need some help from some rotary heads. I am currently looking to get a second car for summer cruising, and well modifying. I am stuck between an 05/06 RX8 GT or a 93 RX7 turbo. The RX7 has about 30,000miles on it and so does the rx8. which car would you get and why?
The price on the cars are similar, I have no previous experience with Rotary cars but was in an rx8 recently and loved it, also been in an older 89RX7 turbo and loved it.
I appreciate all your assistance.
Thank you,

I believe the 8 is better for you. The 8 requires some maintenance but not a lot.
The 7 will require more maintenance and you have no knowledge and will end up in the shop more than on the road. But if you did have the skills to pay the bills, the 7 is a potential monster.

a 7 with 30k is very rare and if you keep it relatively stock and keep up the maintenance is should be fine in reliability. i would do some research on 7club if you really want to get the FD. the rx8 will be much easier to deal with because it is newer and has a warranty already, but the rx7 will always have more potential for performance.

As far as performance goes, pour $10,000 into an RX-8 and it MIGHT stand a chance against a stock FD.
But the RX-8 is relatively more reliable and gets much better efficiency. The RX-8 is a unique blend of the RX-7 and a more practical car, and its performance falls between them-ish.

30k miles on an FD? Sure it's not for the new engine?
In any case unless you plan to be the next drift king or try out for the next Fast 'n Fungus movie or has a fetish for early 90s dashboards, the 8 is the overall better car to own. It is no doubt not as fast as the rx7 on the track. So does that matter to you? If you want a track car, the s2000 is fantastic and still more reliable and modern than the rx7.

It also holds .97 on the skidpad.
I've seen it happen with an RX-8, just not without a big *** turbo.

it's very very hard to find unmodded FDs, and most ppl that did tune their 7s simply screwed them up.
If you can find a bone stock FD with those kinds of miles on it, BUY IT!!!!!
And the FD is also one of my favorite cars of all time as far as looks go.

the FD is one of the most amazing and beautiful cars of all time. as old as they are, they still will turn heads. they kinda look like a viper..only better.
they are notoriously unreliable and it's hard to find people who can work on them. they are fast though.
if you had it as a daily driver I'd say forget it. FORGET IT. if this is a third toy car and you can afford to have it in the garage, up on jack stands, or in a shop paying someone else to make it work, tune it right, replace parts, etc. it would be a very fun car to have. extremely unique, and coudl be extremely fast.
I went thought this dilemna recently... i'm looking for a third car, and I like the RX8 and all through high school and college I lusted after the third gen RX7. when I finally graduated and had the money to buy one, it was 1999-2000 and they were all used, and I opted to buy a newer more reliable car.
now that I"m even older and have even more money, but have even more obligations - wife/kids - I'm even more reluctant to want to get a car like an FD. you are almost gauranteeing yourself that you will be in/out of a shop, and not the mazda dealer, good chance they would F*** it up. i'd want to find a rotary specialist..and then unless you live in a major city, you are traveling a good distance to get good work done and you will be paying good money for it.
in my honest opinion, for the time/sweat/money it would take to find a very nice clean used FD and then get it in proper working order, and setup the way you would like it - you'd just be better off buying a newer more modern more reliable sports car.
if you want a rotary, you'd probably have less headaches finding a nice clean RX8. it will not be as fast, but it will be on the road and not in the shop.
i've had modded cars, and had to do the take it to a custom tuner shp thing...and believe me...it gets to be a big fat PITA after a while. i pumped over 10,000 into a previous car - it was very fast, very custom, turned heads...and was fun to drive, but it got to be a pain to NOT be able to service it at the dealer, and deal with all the little things that go wrong on a car that is not bone stock and/or finicky.
i'd rather have a bone stock car that is fast/sporty out of the box, with a warranty, and let the dealer fix stuff that goes wrong and have more peace of mind, less headches, and accept that my car is not "as fast" as it could be.
depends what stage you are at in your life and what your priorities are. good luck
