Should I buy an 04?

What warranty do you speak of? The 8yr/100k is only for the Engine Core and nothing else. There is a 8yr/80k for the CAT, I think. Anything else you would need to pay for. Most people when selling an RX8 call the engine core warranty an "extended warranty" because it is technically true. Mazda extended the warranty on the engine. If you are talking about one of those third party car warrantys that "fix things" when they break, Good Luck. I have seen those companies **** over too many people. My friends tranny blew and the company told him it was due to lack of maint. and physical abuse and would not pay for the repairs.

I have an 04 for 5 years, and 50k plus miles. My suggestion is DON'T BUY A 2004!!
There is a 50% probability your transmission will go out then Mazda won't do ****. Listen to the people who lived it. The 2004s are technically flawed. That was a good $3300 lesson I just learned and am passing it on to you.

I am considering buying an inexpensive RX-8 to drive on weekends and basically have fun with, driving my Acura TL the rest of the time.
Problem is that I still have 2 years of payments on the TL and don't want to part with such a reliable car. What I am thinking about doing is refinancing the TL for 3-4 years and purchasing an inexpensive 2004 RX-8 and financing it for 4 years.
Doing the math, it means my monthly car payment is the same as it is now, just covering a longer period of time.
I am wondering if an inexpensive 04 is worth the risk. I can't afford the extra costs associated with an 06 or later. I can find 04's with reasonable mileage (< 50k) for under $15000, with many in the $10000-12000 range.
Considering the situation, do you think purchasing an 04 is an acceptable risk? or are the potential issues with a first-run production more trouble than they're worth?

Thanks for all of the feedback.
I got a killer deal on an 05 Shinka with a bunch of MazdaSpeed enhancements for $12k. I hope to take delivery of it within the next week or two.

I think I got a smokin' deal on it. 42k miles new tires and a nice warrantee. A perfectly clean ride! I don't know much about them but I am learning loads on this forum.
It does seem a bit slow from the start and when I am sitting at the stop light it seems to run rough. Mostly when the A/C is on.
What the heck is that?
Anyway. I am having so much fun.
