PA Thoughts on Values

Hello all,

I'm 21 and looking to buy my first RX-8. I've owned a 2000 Accord (placed in my lap from by parents, was my grandmother's car) for a few years now.

I'm looking to join the RX-8 club!

I make about $2,100 a month (and I have about $10,000 saved and the Accord has about $2,200 trade value and about $3,500 PP) and I want to get a 2009 or 2010 R3, in the Aurora Blue. They're surprisingly hard to find right now, but I've found a few...

There's one for sale in New York (about 5 hours from me), it's a 2010 leftover so it's a new car. They have listed for the regular price $32,740, but they had a deal going where they would match your down payment up to $5,500 if financed (I presume through them, which may also be undesirable as I'm looking to get approved through a credit union near me for about 3%). This brings the price down to $27,240, which in my opinion for a leftover is still fairly high.

I also found one about 2 hours from me that is a 2010 with 11,300 miles, and they require an email to contact you about the price. They said they have it listed at $29,999 "with all prices negotiable." This seems outrageous to me!

I also saw one in the classifieds here (a 2009 with about 9k miles) that we talked briefly about, but it would certainly be a better deal than these others and he nicely offered to meet me halfway!

Any thoughts on these prices would be very appreciated! And I hope I can soon join the club.

For the $5500 down payment match, you can always refinance with your credit union. I have done this several times with different cars. And just cause they have that deal doesn't mean you can negotiate first the price first. Just don't talk about the down payment deal until after you get the price down.

When I bought my car (August 2010) I ran across several R3's with around 10k miles being sold for 21-23k from dealerships. For a new RX8 R3 you should be able to get them down to 28ish because as you can see they will not sell for there list price of 33k.

You should keep looking because those prices seem a little high.

Thank you both for the responses!

I thought these prices were a little high as well... I just found another new leftover 2010 R3 only about 60 miles from me for which they have listed on sale for $27,995, spot on with what you said.

I'm looking to get pre-approved for a loan with my mom as a co-signer (unfortunately I have no credit, but my mom has excellent credit). I'm hoping my rather large down payment and her credit will help me secure the pre-approval, and I'm also hoping this would give me some good buying power (and finally build credit!).

I'm thinking I should try to get the dealer down as far as possible, perhaps tell them I'm looking at an '09 with 9k miles for $22,000 and see what they can do for me. At that point it would be a tough decision... what are your guys' thoughts on this?
