As a testament of the rotary engine, I own an 87 RX-7. The engine just hit 142,000 miles about a week ago,and it is still perfect. No problems, pulls strong, and has great compression.
Don't let the rotary engine scare you away, its a VERY unique car, and as long as you take care of it, it will take care of you. My RX-7 has never let me down, just because i've never let it down.
I'd go with the RX8, I plan on getting one soon, not because I don't like my rx7, but because I want to put my rx7 in the garage for awhile while it gets pampered with parts to restore it to new.
You won't regret the car if you take care of it. Go for it

Regarding the flooding issues.
I think its easier to start up on older rotary engine than Renesis cuz of the Exhaust port. Older engines will simply push everything away out into the exhaust port. Renesis's side exhaust port has a little gap so unuse gas will carry over to the next combusion process. Its just my own theroy, not scientifc at all. So correct me if Im wrong.
To indianadoug :
Well, rotary is no different than any other engine, at some point of view it should last longer than regular piston engine .... if it gets proper care of course. Forget about what the otheres said, people will only talk about it when something is not right, just count how many people are talking about *problems* on this forum, u'll know how rare it is.
To Rxhate:
Too bad, I never had any problems. if you hate it that much, sell it / dump it, forget it, dont come back. Thats all. but just wanted to let you know that every single car line-up has their own lemon/problems too. so should you hate every single car out there ? Bicycle all the way baby !~~~~
