youd be surprised.. my POS 2001 honda civic is the most expensive car I have to insure, the rx8 is 1/3 it's rate.

exotic/rare cars actually tend to have fairly low rates until their price tag breaks 100k.

I think horsepower and number of doors play a role. Thus my query.

Plus, the car he really wants is a Viper. Me too.

At the time. My friend got a lower quote on his Viper than he did on his Integra.
I guess statistically, there were less wrecks involving Vipers and 18 year olds than there were with Integras.

He had also gotten a quote on a supra, they wanted 3500 for 6 months
They said statistically he would wreck it in less than 6.

Funny, but the secret gift you get with the RX8 is the insurance rating for:

1. Having no cylinders ... so they assume it's four (when its really like a V6)

2. Having four doors ... they call it a Sedan.

This makes up for the poor gas mileage and balances out the ownership.

Congrats!!! :D

Thats for a whole year? Dammit, mine costs more than that for 6 months. Is that some sort of special police deal?

Holy crap. We pay 1600 a year for 3 vehicles: the 8, a 99 miata, and an 05 titan, all with full coverage.
Hooray for marriage!

$710/year for me. and that's with all the bells and whistles (gap, towing, rental, etc.). my agent told me it's because of the 4 doors, rated as a sedan.

My insurance went up approx. $300/year (was about $800, now about $1100) when I traded my 8 for my 2005 Volvo S40. Don't know why, but I shopped around and couldn't find any better rate.

State Farm's explanation of my drop from my Mustang

BTW...
Mustang (6mths) - 590.00
RX8 (6mths) - 395.00

1. Four dour sedan category
2. More airbags
3. Limited slip differential and ABS/DSC in GT model
4. Consider equiv to a 4 cylinder engine (at first they didn't know what to make when I answered no cylinders)
5. HP rating below 250 (signficantly changes rate for some reason)

The big spread in prices has more to do with the following:

AGE - BIG ONE ... When I turned 30, my insurance rate cut in HALF

Marriage - Being married lowers rates

Sex - Not as important as it used to be

Location - City rates are higher, some states are even higher

Coverage/Deductibles

Longevity - BIG ONE for STATE FARM. I've been with them since I was 16 (now almost 20 years). After 5 years and no accidents = 10% discount, 10 years and no accidents with SF = 15%, 15 years w/ SF and no accidents = 20% discount. BTW, after 10 years you are given a pass on ONE major accident (I had one in a rental and my rebate rating wasn't dropped)

Other Insurance - Additional rebates if you have the same company do your rental/homeowner's insurance, multiple vehicles, etc.

Switching to GEICO for me would INCREASE my insurance by 25%. At least for SF, loyalty is rewarded. I think Allstate does the same thing. Not sure of the rest.
