I just took delivery of a 2005 RX-8 automatic with GT. I added splash guards, alarm sensor, night lights, moon roof deflector, alluminum pedals, spare tire kit (dealer just forgot to install the tire...now thinking about telling them to just give me the $350 back) plus car cover for $29,948 (less if i forego the spare tire). Dealer is in Hatfield PA and overall OK. For base car they say it was $300 over invoice but I'm sure they made more with the add-ons.

I'm in NC. Just paid 30K flat (tax and tags incl.) for a Titanium Gray 6spd with the 1RT touring package ( moon roof, Bose audio, fog lamps & zenon headlights, dynamic stability control) but did not include leather seats. So part of the deal included a custom shop leather upgrade. ... But they got me later on the Sirius radio: $650

I'm in Augusta GA.
I got my '05 with only GT package for $28,805.
I took delivery on January 3, so it might have counted for them to get off their sister lot before the end of the year. You know. Tax reasons.
It was only $400 more than my inital offer which I was kind of happy with.

I should also mention that I had a trade-in as part of the negotiation.
I asked for and (finally) got the Kelly Blue Book "trade-in" value for my old car.

My cost on an 05

The dealer wants 2005 invoice price + $500. I'm making the deal using KBB invoice prices, and confirming with the dealer invoice from Mazda.

Sound like a good deal, and there's no haggling.

i used to think that getting a car at invoice price was just average until i hear a bunch of you saying that the 05/ rx-8's are hard to come by at invoice price. I just picked up my 2nd RX-8 at (for you So Cal people..) Glendale Star Mazda!. Without haggling at all, literally my first offer of $300 under invoice, they gave it to me right away! Anyone in the market stop by there, it's a small dealership but they were by far the most honest and straight forward sales people I've dealt with. BTW, I got a 05 Whitewater Pearl, GT package, appearance package, rotory accent package, navigation, and rear wing for $31900 before taxes. Invoice was $32200 or something like that.

I remember that a while back someone posted a pdf file that showed what invoice was on the '04's. Had a nice breakdown as to all the options, etc.

Anyone know if someone has posted something similar for the '05 model?

(hopefully someone here knows what I'm talking about) ;-)

After starting this thread on Dec. 9th a forum member emailed and told me he had a 2005 Whitewater Pearl GT 6 speed with 2k miles on it that he needed to sell. I bought it at the end of Dec. for $26.750. Thanks for all the replies.

I bought my Whitewater Pearl '05 just under a month ago for $27,135. No options to speak of. They gave me a lot more for my trade than I was expecting, so I'm quite happy with the deal.

We cannot compare the 04 to the 05. It's already a year old and the price they sell for matches it's current real market value. If you want an 05, you gotta pay, but you are getting a lot of that money back in terms of resale value and future trade in. For $29,900 on a 05 GT with nothing else, that is about $8-$900 over invoice, so no it's not a good deal at all,. but also isnt' $1500 over either. Anything $500 over invoice or below is respectable, and at invoice on an 05 now is way better then it was when we got our 04 models. I too paid at invoice back in february of last year. However, there were not leftover 03 rx8s there, so that plays a big role in the deals on 05 model.

There should be plenty of left over 2003 RX8s as there should be plenty of left over 2004 models according to their corporate sales numbers.

The numbers are for US production and sales only!

I'm curious as to what happens to all the models that don't get sold. Does the company buy them back?

So would $29,000 be a reasonable price for a 6-speed '05 with Grand Touring package and nothing else? Presumably that doesn't include tax & license.

Yes. That is a good deal. It is right at invoice. As time passes the deals will get a little better, but if Mazda plays it smart and does not overflood the 05 model, which I'd think after the 04 mistake they will not, at invoice or a few hundred below is the best most of us will see for the 05. If it's lying around when the 06 comes out, the peanut deals will begin again.

If anyone wants an '05, I would HIGHLY recommend trying a website called mycar.com. I used this last year when I got my 8 and it virtually guarantees you the best deal possible without having to talk to a salesman. It costs 19.95 to use. It is an auction that works similar to ebay.

Here's how it works...you want an '05 RX-8...ok you sign up and chose the RX-8 as the car you want (all you need to know is if you want manual or A/T; color and options don't matter at this point). The website will take the 10 Mazda dealers closest to your zip code and give them a week to essentially bid against each other for your business. The bidding is based on the dealer invoice price for the car. They can bid an amount over, at, or under invoice. When a bid is placed, you will receive an email letting you know. You can view your auction status at anytime while it is in progress and see what dealers have bid, and the amount of their bid. The same dealer may make multiple bids if they want to. I used this service in Feb. of '04 and got my 8 for $600 under invoice. All I had to do is go down to the dealer and pick out the car I wanted, and I already had my price set without having to dick around with a salesman.

One more plus of this service...even after the auction ends and bids have been placed, you are not under any obligation to buy the car, and the dealer does not contact you. If you like a bid, you can contact the dealer to confirm it and you are set. And if for some reason no bids are placed at all, you get your 19.95 back.

2005 Shinka

I bought a 2005 Shinka for 31,300 yesterday in Oakland, CA. The dealer originally said that he could not come off the sticker price! I think he would have taken 31, but probably not less.

The Consumers Union report on the RX-8 Shinka says that dealer invoice is $30,525, and that wholesale (the lowest price to the dealer) was $29,876.
