Shifter rebuild kit for JDM 5 spd tans - source

Hey Guys,

Bumping this thread as it was asked here before but no definitive answer. I have a JDM 5 spd trans and need to rebuild my shifter assembly completely. To me, the turret and the shifter itself as well as the rubber boots look plenty similar to my NA / NB Miata 5 speed parts. I have a few Miata trans in the garage but for the life of me cant find the shifters now that I need them LOL. Can anyone help? Can anyone confirm what shifter assembly should fit the JDM 5 speed? has anyone rebuilt their shifter and rubber boots?

I would appreciate any info.

Cheers.

this is the Mazda OE RX8 5-speed shifter assembly part # R51317510

pretty sure it won’t be the same since there doesn’t appear to be any crossover to other models except maybe the FD3, but I seem to recall somebody saying they had to make some slight modifications to an aftermarket FD3 short shifter to fit it correctly. You might try searching the forum for 5-speed etc.

(17-510)

@TeamRX8 Thank you for the diagram. I was able to locate a Miata NA/NB 5 speed shifter in my parts pile and did confirm that a number of components are the same. I marked your diagram with the ones that are interchangeable. The ones marked in Red i had to re-use from the rx8 5 speed but those don't wear out. That way you can re-use the rubber boots from an Rx8

My top rubber boot was torn I didn't feel like spending $100 for a new one so I made a hybrid using a part of the torn boot and a silicone collapsible funnel from the kitchen drawer LOL. it so happens that this is exactly the diameter that fits snuggly and i think silicone is a bit more flexible and heat-resistant than rubber. We'll see how long it lasts.

I think it would be hard to beat this optionfor the price. It fits very well in there as its last section folds under the fold of the original boot locking it in place. Plus you could use some rubber cement if you wanted to but I don't think you need to.

You even get another smaller one in the set that you can gift to the wife for kitchen use LOL...all for $7

silicone will likely last longer than rubber given the heat it’s exposed to there.

good to know. What about the input shaft seal and output shaft seal? Anyone replace those yet?

same as FD3

it’s really mostly an updated FD3 RX7 TT transmission. They added some additional syncros, which in turn the gears had to be narrowed up some to allow room for them. There are some other changes so you can’t just blindly start trying to swap parts, but some parts like seals are directly interchangeable. The RX8 version is shorter about 3” from bellhousing mounting face to the shifter than the FD3 due to the different engine placement relative to shifter hole position on the RX8 chassis. You can however swap the RX8 bellhousing along with tailhousing and shift mechanism parts onto an FD3 trans center housing with all the gearing and shafts and then drop it into the RX8. Alternatively you can swap the RX8 bellhousing, clutch slave cylinder, and TOB actuator arm with pivot assy onto an FD3 trans along with the proper clutch to convert the FD3 from a pull to push clutch arrangement. The gear ratios of the JDM RX8 5-spd are the same as the USA/CA FD3 trans. The EU version of the RX8 5-spd has a different gear ratio for 3rd and 5th OD gears. Never seen one of those imported to the USA though. Only the JDM version.

I’ll try to compile a full parts number list for the JDM RX8 5-spd transmission and post it. You essentially need access to the JDM parts listing. Unless they were sold on or crossover to other Mazda models in the USDM then first and foremost they won’t be specifically listed in the USA parts system for the RX8. Because Mazda never imported it on any RX8s that came here. Any parts not intended for USA vehicles would need to be imported from Japan. Which is not that hard to do once you have the necessary part numbers.
