When I read post such as this, it makes me appreciate just how great my servicing dealership is. Other than scheduled maintanance, I have not dropped a dime on my car. They even tell me what to say to get items looked at and replaced for free. Awesome!! They told me over a month ago about this latest emission recall. I swear, if it wasn't for the guys in the service dept. my rx8 would have had a new home a year ago.

Do the pads and battery yourself. Odds are your rotors are just fine unless there is grinding. Having rotors turned is a big ripoff and 90% of the time it's suggested that you do it just so they can make more money, not because you need it. The same goes for the filters quite often, it's just easy for them to make a quick buck.

The shop was indeed Rider Mazda in State College.
And to clear up any misperception, the 310.00 stated was for brake pads ONLY FOR FRONT... and to mechanically turn the rotors on BOTH FRONT & REAR!
I love hearing about all your stories, & I'm certainly glad you all have had some good experiences. I think I just have to look around and find the right dealer, make friends, & stick with them for the long haul until otherwise proven wrong.

1. I told him to look at the squealing brakes because there was a TSB for it & mine squealied horrendously. He told me I needed new pads on the front, and both front & rear rotors mechanically shaved. About $300 all together.
2. I told him to check my starter/battery because the start crank was taking a while lately to start up. He said my battery failed the low test & I needed a new battery. Parts & labor around $140 all together.
3. He said I should also have my air filter & cabin air filter replaced. $50 & $60 respectively + labor.
!!! Now, I already told him about the brakes and I'm gonig to bring up the TSB again b/c I have the hard copy in front of me, but isn't there also something about the Battery being covered under warranty. I could have sworn I saw something. Please let me know if all of this griping is unnescessary and if I should just pay and have it done, or tell me if there is anything I can do.

PSU,
As an alternative Dean Patterson Mazda in Altoona may prove to be a better choice than Rider. I've taken my 8 there 3 times for warranty/recall work with good luck. I can't speak to there service in regards to scheduled maintainece.
As a side note, I'd love to meet up some time. I'm in the st. college area often. There's not to many 8 owners locally. Please feel free to PM me if you are interested.

i would never do brakes at a dealer, they are complete rip offs... if you can not do the brake job yourself, go to a good shop that specializes in mazda or japanese cars and you can do it for much cheaper... my 8 doesnt need a new brake job, but i just changed out my front brake pads and rotors on my G35... bought the Hawks and Brembo rotors at a local performance auto store and took it to a place where they installed everything for 70 bucks... The infiniti dealer wanted to charge me 270 for new front pads and just machining the front rotors.. i got all new ones for cheaper..
also, the Hawks has virtual zero brake dust for me and works great...
