05 Key Fob....

okay, I have seen many talking about it here but seen no good answer yet......

Will the 05 key fobs work with 03 and 04 models with the appropriate remote programming? The key cuting part is the easy part, but will the remote work with the current setup we have?

All the dealers that I have asked don't know yet--however the '05s are rolling on lots now-so I suspect we'll know in the next couple of weeks.

OK, I'm going to sound like an idiot but I just can't figure it out. I know whey you talk about the key fob your talking about the remote key entry device. But what I can't figure out is this 'fob' thing. Is it an acronyn and if so what does fob stand for?

Make fun of my stupidity if you feel the need to... I can take it.

The 05 keys will work on 03-04 cars, with the correct programming procedure...

I wouldn't see a problem with the 05 keys working with the 03-04's, they should be very similar if not the same in how to reprogram it. The ONLY difference I could see is if they change something about the key, where the grooves/teeth are and or how it talks to the car (whihch I doubt they would)

When you all are discussing the fob-key, are you meaning the 05's are rumored to have a similar key to the VW's, the switchblade style?

yes AKS4--the retractable FOB. Well now we just have to wait and see what the dealers are charging for the 05 fobs. Cortc--you have confirmation of this?

a short strap or chain attached to a pocket watch is called a fob. you pull on it to get the watch out of the pocket. an ornament attached to said strap or chain is also called a fob. the use of the word has been extended in modern times to include the plastic, metal, wood or leather piece attached to a key ring and really to almost any short piece of any material that is attached to an item to help hold it or pick it up. in this instance we are talking about the black remote. the 05 version is a "switch blade" type which allows for folding the key into the remote.

Fob

1. A short chain or ribbon attached to a pocket watch and worn hanging in front of the vest or waist.
2. An ornament or seal attached to such a chain or ribbon.
Basically the dangly bit attached to the key. In the olden days, you know, like a couple decades ago, it'd be just the standard leather bit with the dealership's logo on it, or the shiny metal keychain dangly thing you got. Now it's got all high tech wizbang electronics.

Technically, the Fob is removed from the 05 Key, and integrated into the key itself. The 05 keys would really be Fobless... unless of course you added your own Fob bit, like a remote starter, garage door opener, lucky rabbits foot.

VW Key comparison...

To fob or not to fob, that is the question...

Indeed. I think that Mazda, in a shrewd public relations move, and in order to reward us loyal customers, should present each of us with one of these keys.

Yeah, I think it's kind of lame that those of us who bought the car first year, who got to help them "work out the kinks" and had faith in Mazda, get stuck with the lame key. Why did they wait 'til '05?

I don't get what the big deal is with retractable keys. You are still going to have your house key dangling besides the key fob. Now, if there is is a unit that can retract / hide your house key(s) also, then I'd be interested.

I personally carry no other keys so this would be a perfect solution (electronic keypad house entry). I would love to see what the other side of that combo-key looks like.
