I would expect a SMG version of a car with launch control to be just as quick as the regular manual transmission version of the same car driven by an expert driver (read, the SMG would be quicker than most of us driving a manual! )

Hmmm....I like what I am hearing. :D

Audi has a transmission that is even better than any SMG - their DSG, available on the TT3.2 and new S3, has two clutches and shifts quicker/smoother than a traditional single-clutch SMG (Ferrari, BMW, etc). Isn't the S3 due in North America soon?

Gordon

The SMG unit I experienced was in a Z4 2.5 and it was extremely jerky on upshifts--however in the M3 and new M5 the SMG is much better.

WHat a salesman told me...

After I purchased my car, I was BS'ing with a diffrent salesman. He told me that the reason why they were pushing a two year lease this fall was because the RX-8 will only have a 3 year life. In 2007, there will be a different rotary car. The salesman said he heard they will re-introduce the RX-7....

Ummm salesmen are like... well nevermind what they are like. My Mazda salesman tried to pass off the DSC switch as the rear defroster switch
Kinda like when the dark chrome wheels came out from Mazda and one forum member said he was told they were TITANIUM (not colored titanium - made of)

Salespeople... are there to sell. I take all the information I get from them with a POUND of salt.

But mention of a new 7 has me very enthusiastic... MAZDA hurry it up!

Let's see... spend years of R&D developing a new car from the ground up to be your flagship, and then 3 years later trump it with a different car. I don't buy it. The bad reputation of the FD reliabilty-wise makes me think that maybe after the MPS 6, MPS 3 then MPS 8, when the Renesis' durabilty is proven, an Rx-7 may be produced (so i'm guessing 2009 :p )

Agreed. All of the manufacturers have gone to "platform" engineering. The RX8 structure would have been designed with future models in mind. Easily modifiable for a family of front engine, rear wheel drive vehicles. Time-to-market has decreased through technology used in the design phase, but there are still huge investments in tooling that need to be amortised. Six years without significant change would seem to be about right for a company like Mazda.

New Golf GTi also has it, and posted 0-60 is slightly quicker than the full stick version.

DSG is cool - now they just need to learn about suspension, eh?

Maybe you arn't aware of this, but salespeople are idiots...for the most part.

Audi is releasing the A3 over here in 2005. Its basicly a 2 door hatchback. The interesting part about it is that in 2006 they will release the A3 with the 3.2 liter direct injection engine putting out about 260 hp with the DSG and Quattro all wheel drive. Its basicly a TT but probably ten thousand dollars cheaper.

Just out of curiosity, do you have anything useful to post anymore? Everytime I see you post, it's something silly like this. Maybe I'm just catching the wrong posts. Who knows, but the 06 RX8 isn't too far off, so why is it out of the realm of reason to ask?
