1/4 mile
My friend has a 2005 rx-8....its all stock with about 25% tread left on its back tires and he expects to hit high 14's to low 15's....and his logic on drag racing go something like this..."i will just launch with traction control on so i wont loose traction but it will launch as high as possible".....I like the rx-8 and it is a quick car but from what i've read it got a 14.5 brand new with a pro car and driver driver...would these times be possible for him?...thanks

Your friend is a moron.
Real life traction control doesn't work like Gran Turismo traction control. You cannot just floor it and drop the clutch and let the computers give you a professional-grade start. He will rev high, drop the clutch, the tires will chirp, the traction control will stop all throttle input (he'll be coasting), and wait for the revs to drop before slowly giving him full throttle output.
If he drags with his traction control on, he's going to get laughed at.

I'm sorry but when I read this, I was thinking about watching the horror / comedy of it and it cracked my **** up...

He gave you a very direct answer. Its dumb to use traction control when launching during a drag race. TCS will completely bog your power down.

from 1/2mv's post I think you can infer that he cannot.
and if that doesn't give it away, I think the first line in his post does.

3 things are required to make a car fast in the ¼ mile:
-- High Torque
-- High Horsepower
-- Low Weight
The RX-8 has the torque of an econo-car, and thus doesn't have much to get it moving off the line. It also lacks horsepower, so once those revs start climbing, there still a shortage of power pushing the car forward. Fortunately, the RX-8 doesn't weight much, so it's able to accelerate faster than econo-cars with similar HP & Torque.
Long story short - Unless you don't mind blowing tons of cash on engine upgrades, you should never take an RX-8 on a drag strip.
To answer the other part of your queestion, dragging WITH traction control would kill your times by a good 2 or 3 seconds. Off the line you need to keep your revs near the peak of your torque band (4500~5500rpm). Hold your revs at that point and let the tires dig in. Your tires simply have to spin for a few moments if you're going to get a good time.
If you have the traction control on, as soon as your tires begin to spin, the car is going to ignore all throttle input and make you coast until your tires grip. By the time you get said grip, you'll be going 10-15mph. The computers will then slooowly return throttle control to you. To everyone watching the race, it will look like the driver is calmly pulling away, just like they would at a stop sign. He would be lucky to run a 17.
and PS - if name calling on the internet bothers you, then you clearly don't belong here.
