100,000 mile report card

Well, the CAR has 100,000k miles now; the engine about 83k since it was replaced.

Short history:

Within the first year or so, 3 cats, plugs, coils, clutch (clutch went at 13k miles; catastrophic pressure plate destruction), new transmission... uh...few more things it's just been so long I don't recall.

My car sits, generally, in the driveway. Last few years I average about 2-3000k miles, probably topped at 5 or 6k one of those years.

I'm missing part of the under tray.

The radio needs to come out because the radio and HVAC shut off randomly; I have the radio out JUST ENOUGH so now nothing works and I'm stuck.

Driver's headlight shuts off while driving; I'm thinking it needs a new ballast.

The engine overheated a few nights back and now the coolant lamp refuses to shut off.

But I cannot even consider selling the car. Just means a lot to me, still.

I've driven it from Seattle to LA (Lower Alabama) then up here to north-of-Detroit - With a trip to Kansas City and back thrown in, and I think as a road trip car, it's fantastic.

5 December will be my 10th Anniversary of ownership and I probably would do it all over again.

I had a kid come up to me during my Son's football game.

"You're Ethan's dad?"

"Yes"

"I love your car!"

"Which - my truck?"

"No...your Audi."

"I don't have an audi."

"Yeah, silver, black wheels, low to the ground?"

"That's a mazda. RX8"

Kid stares blankly.

"Really??" He asked

"I'm pretty sure." I said.

Reslilent! Love it man. Keep at it. Its a fun car and def a looker, but im sure you knew that, owning it for 10 years. Nice to see people holding on to the 8 rather than the kids who get em, don't know squat and cant afford to maintain and end up selling months after. I've seen quite a few.

jeez sounds like you had a lot of teething issues early on, so engine replaced at 15k miles or so.. at least the replacement one has had a good stint. hopefully the overheating doesn't affect it.

car still looks fantastic too for sitting out side.. how is the paint? any bubbles etc would love a set of RPF1s..

No bubbles - paint seems fine. I haven't waxed the car...ever. Right now - just today - got a ****-load of misfires on the freeway. Car nearly shut down.

Am tired of the issues with the car; although since about 40k miles the car has been solid.

dont give up man, i cant imagine how 10 years of owning an rx8 feels, i know how frustrated and depressed i get when things go wrong with my cars an always want to sell them.

you would be amazed what a professional cut an polish would do for it, would probably bring it back to near new looking paint condition. not too expensive either ($150-200)

Maby just work on some new ignition parts an perhaps the thermostat, coolant tank/ radiator cap & or waterpump is just about done? or just get a compression test an decide from there..

you still got another 10 years of good times ahead!.. try make that 200k club !!

Thanks! I won't give up on the car, but I don't have the time to restore it to glory.

Another 100k Miler (2004) -

I just wanted to add my experience. My RX-8 has just over 110k miles, my experience has been a bit less eventful.

- one taillight assembly replace (condensation)
- one Cat
- new engine at 65k, replaced the clutch plates at the same time
- several sets of coils & plugs
- new radiator and overflow tank
- new fuel pump
- heater/AC control module replaced
- several electrical repairs on the power steering (see thread)

A few other minor repairs/replacements - parking light bulbs, driver-side sunvisor

Not too bad for 10+ years, other than the early engine failure
