10k miles and counting
I just hit 10k on the odometer this morning. Only had the car for about 5 months. Thought y'all would be interested in some stats. If anyone else got their car to 10k, lets post some data so we can compare how the car ages.
Average MPG City/Hwy : 18/22 (I take it easy most of the time, shifting only at 4k for city driving, cruise 75 on the hwy.)
Best MPG City/Hwy : 20/26
Worst MPG City/Hwy : 14/16 (only for the first 2k miles or so, afterwards my mpg just keeps getting better.)
Oil Changes : 1st at 1k, 2nd at 4k, every 3k after that... which reminds me I have to do one tonight...
Oil used : Castrol 5w20
Tranny/Diff Oil Changed : 1 (not because I need it, but because I'm an **** bastard.)
Gear Oil used : Redline 75w90, Redline MT90(?)
Recalls : 1 ( for the airbag)
Other dealer services : 1 (for errant CEL which they traced back to a faulty sensor, replaced after two trips to the dealer. Also had the floor mat hook replaced, the rubber mount of my engine cover replaced and reflashed my ECU to L by my request.)
Bad Karma Events :
1. Nail in tire
2. Scraped guardrail, rear right
3. Scraped guardrail again, front right.
4. Rearended at 5mph in parkinglot
5. Two minor door dings acquired at various parkinglots
6. Bottomed out TWICE going to same restaurant with two different ladies on two seperate occasions.
7. Spilt my drink into the front drink holders
8. Ran into a flock of butterflies, decimating the whole group, which I had to subsequently scrape off my windshield/hood. I ran into so many of them I actually had to pull over because I could no longer see through the windshield. I hope they weren't an endangered species - so rare to see butterflies these days, wtf were they doing flying in a friggin group???
9. Front license plate got smashed when a lady in an SUV with one of those square hitches didn't park her car securely on a hill, backing into my 8. Thankfully, the license plate took the blunt of the damage, no other scraches on body (thankgod), let this be a lesson to all of you! The front license plate might be ugly, but it can protect your car from damage by careless drivers who never learned how to park on a hill.
Misc Observations:
1. The plastic used on the door trim and door sill gets scuffed rather easily. I have to keep wiping it down everyweekend, which I dont mind since I do it regardless anyhow - cleaning my car is relaxing.
2. Bose stereo sucks. It sucks donkey *****. Big hairy donky ***** with lots of hair and some foreign gooey residue. No bass, cd skips like a school girl on a picnic, the headsup display is the ugliest thing since the last thing i woke up next to from a night of binge drinking.
3. There is surprisingly very little wind noise with the sunroof open, VERY NICE!
4. While the Potenzas might suck in cold weather, its more than adequate in warmer climates. The tires squeal and smoke more than I'd like, but it gripped the road firmly. When I replace my tires (soon because I abuse them) I probably wont get them again, but they're better than most stock tires imo.
5. Long trips (6hrs+) of which I took 3 with this car is a blast.
6. The trunk is more useful than I first thought, although I wish Mazda came up with a better way to open the trunk, i dont like getting finger prints on my car.
7. Seat warmers are awesome for 5 minutes, they suck after that.
8. A/C is weak. Its going to be a very interesting summer....
9. Leather seats hold me in pretty well, but I still slide around a little, I wonder if the cloth seats are the same way.
10. The rear windows (those little pop out things) do very little in terms of venting the rear of the car. But are neat nevertheless.
11. If a girl ever comments that your car looks like a huge phalic symbol, ask her out immediately; chances are she'll put out. Chances are even better that she'll do so in the 8. BELIEVE me on this one. (On a side note, its extremely difficult to "stretch" in the backseat, I recommend the passenger seat.)
12. Get the strakes and the rotary accents, they're awesome.
13. I for one have had no break dust on my disks.
14. Oil consumption by the engine was slightly less than anticipated. My friends FD eats more oil. Mazda did a very nice job curving oil consumption.
15. I love the little net behind the passenger seat, I can easily reach into it while driving w/o taking my eyes off the road.
16. 10k miles and I have zero rattles or any other noises. This is one solidly built car.
Conclusion:
I love this damn car. End of story. I'm going to put another 10k miles on this and I doubt my opinion will change.
I'm also going to buy the STI in a month, I hope I enjoy it half as much as I do the 8.

Nice journal of your adventures with the 8! Very nicely put and I gained some insight. I'll watch out for a couple of things on your list.
Thank you!

Yes, I agree with guy321. That is hillarious, especially the side note. I almost inhaled my beer! When your married like me(14 yrs), with 2 kids, I never look at the car in that aspect, I do however love the #3 for some reason. I also hope to enjoy the car for that length of time and also get the mileage you have at that point.

Just zoomed past 11,000 miles and still smiling! I'm so glad I bought my 8. Who cares about traffic on the way home when your 8 is waiting for you? I sure don't.
Over 10,960 miles I've averaged 19.5 MPG with no problems, no flooding, nothing really to complain about. Other than all my coworkers asking *me* to drive to lunch all the time![Wink](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/wink.gif)
All that in just 13 weeks.
I'd give up s*x before I'd give up my RX-8.

just turned 11,000 miles - got mine Sept 24. Gas mileage has improved, but only by a little bit. Brake dust has been slightly reduced as well, but there is still quite a bit. No problems to speak of, and the car is still turning heads - simply amazing.
