18" Wheels
Braking, what would the braking distances be like? I plan on going fast in my RX-8, and I plan on decelerating extremely quick as well. Going fast is fun, but I wanna go fast for a lot longer than just a year or two, until I become a quadrapalegect (sp?) What brakes are being used? Are we getting fancy shmancy brakes? Brakes are important. Very VERY important...

Quadrapalegect Do you mean quadraplegic? What does paralysis have to do with aging or braking? Hey, I may not know what you are talking about but at least you can spell potato whereas our last Republican Vice President couldn't and many wonder if our current President is literate.

Just say "hey Dad, this new RX-8 only has a 1.3-liter engine with 159 ft-lbs of torque." Maybe he'll fall for it.
Edit - and if he's not very knowledgeable about cars, when you take him to the dealer to check out the car, show him the four spark plug wires and he'll think it's a four cylinder. :D
On second thought, the RENESIS probably has coil-on-plug ignition...

I already told him about the 2800 pound thing, and the 9000 rpm, hes knows a fair bit about cars too. I live on in Victoria, and we'll be going over to vancouver to buy the car. I think I'll have to somehow get the guy whos selling the car aside, and tell him to lie about the HP or something...

I wouldn't dream of driving this car as soon as I get my license. Okay, in BC, we have a system where you start out with you L license, or Learners (We call it Losers) then after 6 months, you take a test to get your N. For New driver. Oh, just to let you know, when you have your L, you cannot drive by yourself, and you have to have a regular driver in the car with you. And after 18 months, you get to take the test to get a reg license. I'll start out with my families Toyota Corolla (98), It's a nice car. Reliable. Anywho, I won't have enough dough saved until about Grade 12, (I'm in grade 10 right now) so, I'm thinking I'll be able to get enough dough, from my working at Pizza Hut and everything. So I'll have about 2 years of driving under my ***.:p
Oh And by the way, I will have the nicest car in school, the chicks will not be able to stay away

I'd just like to say Hi. I just came in here and started talking, but I'd like to just be welcomed by the wonderous world of wankel. Hey, did you guys know that they hold a party in felix wankels name each year in germany? That's kinda honourable, no?

then you should also say that a lot of the other bad drivers are whiteys, like (i assume, 'cause you're from victoria) you and me...
not that you're a bad driver, but you can't single out one demographic as "something something" without stating specific reasons why:
the reason that many of the accidents that are featured in the newspapers happen to be caused by oriental (the vast VAST majority of which are chinese) teens is because of the culture that has arisen for them in Vancouver and Richmond, not to mention the rest of the GVRD. Many of these oriental immigrants are very wealthy, and the parents buy these kids really quick (or reasonably quick) vehicles, and they like to street race.
but, if you're implying that most asiatic people are bad drivers 'cause they're asiatic, ya, that's racist (not that i think you are... :D)
anyhoo ilovepotatos, the biggest determinants in braking distances are:
1)weight of the vehicle
2)grip of the tyres!!
3)how bad the fade is in one go...
blueadept has been telling horror stories about some car he used to have, and how bad the fade was just from spirited driving on the road... but unless you're racing around a road circuit, or being a real ******** on the streets, you really shouldn't encounter any significant amount of brake fade...
bigger brake disks, and the slotted or (groan!!) cross-drilled kind too, are there to reduce fade, by simply absorbing and dispersing more heat at once... the bigger calipers and more abrasive pads do generate more friction, but if the grip of your tyres is exhausted (and they lock) with smaller calipers and less aggressive pads, there's no reason at all to get bigger/stronger ones...

That was exactly what I meant. When you goto Vancouver, you see all these cars, all these Preludes, and you wonder who bought them for them...I didn't mean in any way that Chinese people are bad drivers.

Hey guys, I'm going to work tonight. There's a guy that works there that thinks that Mazda are cheap and crappy cars. Hes thinkin of getting an Acura Integra, what should I say to defend my car, while makin fun of his? (He knows I want an RX-8)

When you get a cheap beater, remember that it isn't really designed to live that long or be pushed as hard as most of us do.... don't just assume that everything will always work... check your tyres, brakes, oil linkages etc... regularly. It's better than them breaking when you need them most!

If he's made up his mind you won't be able to change it. be satisfied in your own knowledge,.... and let him be satisfied in his, at least until you have the car... but even then, let him come to his own conclusions.
A car is not about bragging rights, it's about your own satisfaction.... if it's the car you want, then it's automatically the best car in the world... for YOU.
I suppose however that you could point out that Mazda is the ONLY Jap manufacturer to ever win the LeMan 24 hours... (With a rotary no less)...
The one most important piece of advice I guess I can give, is this.... "In life other people don't have to loose for you to win".... If you can get what, while letting other people have what they want, then things will flow a lot smoother.

Okay, first off my advice to you is to take two years and just learn to drive really well. The people on these boards (the majority at least) realize that any idiot can go fast, but it takes skill to work out corners and twisties.
Then when you're ready, go have a track day with him and any car he so chooses (and if he's leaning to the Integra now, god knows what he'll be looking at later :P), and have your way with him.
Besides, an Integra is FWD and that can't even come close to comparing to an RX-8.

Victoria's track sucks. It's western speedway, and it's about 200 meters in circumfrence. If that. It's an oval, and it sucks. It wouldn't take much on that. Where else could I go?
