1st post, have a question...
First off, what's up, how you guys doing? This is post number one for me, I've been on RX7Club.com many times before, as my first love was the RX-7. However, the more and more I read about the RX-7 the more I realised that it was the wrong car for me. With all of the RX-7's (3rd Gen) problems and lack of practicality it made me look somewhere else. So, naturally I looked to the 8.
To get back on topic, I have a few questions...
1. Does the 8 have any of the problems the 7 had?
2. What are you guys paying in insurance, I'm 18 with clean driving record?
3. Are the performance parts expensive?
4. Are replacement parts expensive?
5. How easy is it to get this car fast?
6. Is there a big aftermarket for the RX-8?
7. What is the model number of the RX-8, i.e. RX-7 is an FD3S.
Thanks for your replies fellas, I appreciate all your help. Sorry if my list got a little long, I really want this car badly.

1. Does the 8 have any of the problems the 7 had?
Only some flooding and poor gas mileage
2. What are you guys paying in insurance, I'm 18 with clean driving record?
Insurance is cheaper than you'd think. I pay 100 /month (2pts and 26)
3. Are the performance parts expensive?
Pretty much. 300 for an intake, 500 for exhaust. 3000 for a turbo kit
4. Are replacement parts expensive?
Not really. Not much needs replacing.
5. How easy is it to get this car fast?
Not very. A turbo kit is really the only way to get upwards of 50HP
6. Is there a big aftermarket for the RX-8?
Its growing but I wouldn't call it big.
7. What is the model number of the RX-8, i.e. RX-7 is an FD3S.

2.) At 18 any performance car is going to be pricey to insure but the backseats, displacement, and 4 doors on the RX-8 will help keep it lower than a lot of them.
3.) Moreso than some car with larger aftermarket but they're not outrageous. The biggest difference you'll see is it's probably tougher to find used parts.
4.) <shrugs>
5.) Not very
6.) Not as big as most performance cars
7.) SE3P

5. wrong car if you're looking for speed only
6. not yet, too early...

Thanks to those of you that actually responded in a mature and constructive fashion. I didn't see what the big deal was, to ask a few very simple questions. However, as simple as it seemed to most, aparently not as simple to others.
wedge357, there are heat issues with the RX-8? I know that the RX-7 was like a furnace, but that was because of the turbos and tight space. The RX-8 is N/A, it still has heat issues? Any of your hoses crack? Any of them break? The RX-8 doesn't have the problem with the o-rings breaking and allowing coolant into the housing does it?

Isn't there something wrong when the first polite post is from a guy who doesn't even own an 8?
1. Does the 8 have any of the problems the 7 had?
The apex seals have improved. If you hear reports that the car floods easily, thats old news. this was largely fixed with later flashes.
2. What are you guys paying in insurance, I'm 18 with clean driving record?
Insurance companies think it's a four-door family car, and I'm not about to wise them up.
3. Are the performance parts expensive?
"Expensive" is a relative term, so it's hard to say. Main thing is there is not a large aftermarket yet for rotary engines, because this is the first one sold here since the RX-7. If the 8 is a success, there probably will be a bigger aftermarket.
5. How easy is it to get this car fast?
I'm not a tuner, but beware that the rotary engine is notoriously low on low-end torque. The real beauty of this car is that the smaller rotary engine sits lower and farther back, which improves its handling.
Hope that helps.

if you actually *searched* in the problems & issues section, you'll see that there will be an inpending recall on the 8 to address this excessive exhaust heat issue
so there you go, it's not that i don't want to answer your question, but after so many people have answered them so many times, i don't feel like answer them anymore :p but I do need to step in to address the different 'heat' issues the 7's and 8's are dealing with, because they are quite different and the consequences are different also :D

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
This doesn't seem to be that big of a deal though. The same can be said for most cars can't it? Of course if you aren't moving the heat begins to "leak" into the cabin. Is this a result of poor insulation? Can this be fixed with a little fiberglass heat wrap on the exhaust? If so, than I frankly don't even look at that as a minor issue, because it has such a simple and easy solution.

Mazda is recalling all 04 and most 05 RX-8's to inspect for possible heat damage in the undercarriage, repair as needed, and then install newly designed heatshields to prevent future damage.
this will be done next month, so if you hold off buying for a month you should be able to pick one up WITH the repairs done already :D

on top of that, because of how far back the engine/transmission is, you're almost practically sitting next to the transmission, as well as the exhaust pipes right below it, it gets quite a bit warmer than a normal car :p

one thing you have to remember, this car is brand new; a lot of the problems that the FCs and FDs had to face are simply due to age, so most of the age-related issues (eg hoses cracking, radiators leaking, etc) would not apply to the 8's for some time to come
one addition to the recall thing, Mazda is actually HALTING all sales of RX-8s until the recall/repair has been done on all cars on the lot, so you can't buy one for a month anyway :p

While the consensus is tht the car is NOT fast..it's all relative I guess. Coming from 18 years or so of SUV's, it's FAST to me. Seriously, on my test drive I was up to 125 without realizing it; but as has been mentioned, the real beauty is the awesome handling and of course the looks!
Now be forewarned..you may have some difficulties in the "back seat"....considering you're 18! Best be flexible.. knowwhtimean?

all RX-8 manufactured after 3/22/04 will undergo "Group 2" recall campaign. This mainly consists of visually inspecting the undercarriage for any damages as well as updating the PCU.
Once this is done (and it should not take long) sales of the RX-8 can be resumed.

Well, I don't plan on buying an RX-8 untill Christmas time anyway. But I do plan on buying used, but since the recall is underway then all of them should be fixed by that time right? And if it hasn't undergone the recall, could I take it at that time.
Truthfully, I'm not very flexible, so I guess those sorts of activities will remain in the bedroom and in the lake in my backyard. God, I love that lake, it's just irresistible to chicks! They see the moon glaring off the water and whatever and it's just game over from that point on. Thanks for the manly advice though Shinka!

Oh what a trip down memory lane...
12 years ago, as a kid with no idea what the world was like, I started a thread, got flamed by a guy and asked stupid questions. Oh where has the time gone?
Amazing to read this and think how madly in love I was with FD’s and all these years later, I actually bought one.
Now I'm cruising the forum for info on NA Renesis builds to swap into an NC Miata...my how far I’ve come...lol!
If you’re a “noob” or a hopeful rotary enthusiast, let this thread be an inspiration to you! Go get a job, make some money and you can have this:
Well, not this one exactly...this ones mine ;-)
