1st post! Hello

Hi there.

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I live in London and am 28 yrs old.

I currently drive a Ford Puma which i have enjoyed but it's about time for a change.

I love the look of the rx8, have read many many positive reviews and i dont see many on the streets. The four doors appeals to me as the other half is talking about having kids already!

However before going out and buying one (probably an 04 reg 231) I have a couple of questions I hope owners in a similar situation to me can answer.

I will use the 8 as my everyday car, which means short journeys to and from the station during the week but fun long drives most weekends.

I know all about the oil/petrol issue and i'm not really bothered about that.

I intend to care for the car properly but I dont want it to be too much of a chore.

Do you think this is the right car for me?

Has your car been reliable for day to day station type runs??

Thanks

Joe

(Oh...and what do you reckon is the best colour)

Who said the short journey's aren't fun either?!?! I use mine as a daily driver (to and from the station as well) and have had no problems.

I have a Silver one but I think the blue one from the X-Men movie is the best colour IMO (I just didn't have the option of getting it).

Hi Joe. Welcome to the forum.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'short runs'. Anything amounting to ten minutes or so is long enough to prevent issues. The long week end runs will help keep the carbon away.
I drive mine to work every day year round but my commute is about 30 min each way.
Silver is the best colour.

Thats encouraging to hear, i'v e pretty much made my mind up about getting one but just feel I need reassurance.

I'm getting married in 3 months so will probably have to wait until the new year to buy it. I WANT ONE NOW THOUGH!!!!! AGGHHH

Must stop reading about them, its driving me crazy.

oh...when I say short journey I mean about 10 mins.

welcome, joe. black is the fastest color, and that's really what matters, right?

Aside from the more frequent need for topping off the oil, there really aren't other issues that make the 8 "a chore" to own. DarkBrew is correct - as long as you're running for 10 mins or so the engine temp will be up and everything will be fine. Just don't ever shut it off before the temp gauge needle moves a bit to prevent flooding.

Mine's a daily. Which means everytime I go somewhere I have a great time getting there. No reliability issues - tho I've only got about 22k on the odo so far.

Surf the site a bit and read the "stickies" if you haven't already in your lurking. Just remember that those w/problems make more noise than those w/no problems.

Prlly best to stay away from the Automatic Tranny 04.

Winning Blue is by far the best color for this car. Black looks great on it as well. Red would be the third choice. All the other colors are so boring it makes the car feel sad.

wait wait.. you know.. i think the best color actually hasnt been mentioned.

rental car white.

its just awesome. no words to describe.

joking aside, i saw a RCW (:P) rx8 the other day and i was impressed. it has the gold flake in it as well, so instead of being just a flat white its actually a very creamy color. it looks a lot better in person than in pictures. also, white is the best track color, it just goes better with tons of stickers.

That's perfect. Long enough for it to warm up all the way, and short enough that fuel costs (or frquent fillups) won't be a day to day issue.

Not quite long enough to be good for it (or any car) in the long run if that's all you do, but the weekend drives will fix that.

Why don't you buy the car in three months, and wait til the new year to get married?

Ken

welcome, only thing i can say is drive it and find out if its right for you, i use mine for as a DD. no real problems and haven't looked back since getting the 8. As for having a kid in the backseat, since that was also mentioned, the car's pretty good, not the greatest just cause if you have a tall wife, she won't fit in the front seat if you're using a rear facing seat, my wife is short (like 5'7") so she fits fine.

only thing is i can't fit a full sized stroller in the trunk but thats what those awesome baby backpack things are for :p, works great as a daily driver, does all the responsible adult stuff like getting groceries and providing food, going away on vacation and long weekends. trips are a blast in this car. on all the weekend trips we've been on we've taken her car once, and that was enough :p
