2mm, 4mm it's all the same. They are worn out.
Just change the pads. Turn your rotors and be done with it.

If you dont track your car then keep OEM rotors and order new OEM pads. If you really HAVE to get more aggressive brakes then still keep OEM rotors and get Hawk HP Plus pads for the front. Leave the rears. If you want to stop better and stop shorter, then buy stickier tires. Bigger and better brakes wont make a difference. If you do not understand too well how brakes work, read this sticky.

EDIT: I suggest you save for your decision. Even though that guy is a stranger, i would trust him over a dealer any day of the week. I wouldnt drive it aggressive for more then 3 weeks though so start saving. I myself is in this same situation bro. Right now i barely got my head above water with funds and i still have to come up with money to make a payment on the car. I have to replace the front pads, buy a new ignition system (coils, plugs, wires... preferably from BHR ), and replace tires since i still have factory Potenzas on the car which are so worn and dry rotted i get scared every time i take it on the highway in fear of a blow out.

So payment = $300, brakes = $300, tires = $1k, ignition = $500

Yea.... im fucked. Thank god im doing it all myself.

+1, You hit it exactly on the head. You can already fire off your ABS in straight level dry conditions. Brakes are not the weak link in stopping distance with stock tires.

Good, I'm glad you're doing it yourself. But don't underestimate the time it takes especially if you haven't done it before or your friend hasn't worked on RX8 brakes before. Guys tend to underestimate the amount of time. Think about it, it takes time just to take the damn tires off.

Your friend might discover he doesn't have the proper wrench or whatever. Also, you need to do a good job cleaning the shims and putting on anti-squeal spray or gel. When you take the passenger side front brake pads off, the h-shaped anti squeal thingy will fall off and you'll have to figure out exactly where and how it goes on (there's a thread on this forum with a picture). There are springy metal tabs that position the brake pads and some of those will fall off and you need to put them back as well. My guess is it will probably take you at least 2 hours.

Some of these people here think it's an ego thing if they replace brake pads or do other jobs super fast. If I hear someone do something super fast, it sets off an alarm bell for me because then I'm wondering what their level of attention to detail was. Work slowly and keep the attention to detail at a high level.

You'll be fine. He's just saying take your time make sure you line everything up and keep track of where things go. you'll want some brake cleaner spray and anti squeal gel to put on the back of the pads. Make sure to clean up the shims well and put the gel on them so you don't get brake squeal.

Also you'll want a tool to open the caliper piston up. Either a specific tool or your old pad and a c clap. Have fun!
