2004 or 2008 decision
I am new to the RX world, but have bought and modded more vehicles than I could count (Mustangs, Jeeps, ZX's) I am looking at two differnt RX's to buy, and I would appreciate any feedback from the members. A 2004 that is in great shape with 57K miles, but needs some minor paint work for $11K or a 2009 GT that is pretty close to perfect with 29K miles for around $20K.
My question to the group is would you buy the significantly cheaper 2004 and just budget for whtever it needs or the 2009?
[edit] sorry for the incorrect title
Thanks in advance

I'd go for the newer one, too (although I really do prefer the front end appearance of the original version, hands down. In fact, I hate the newer front grille to the point where I might have to consider a different car. The front end of a car is such a big part of its overall look. I guess, then, I'd look for a 2005-08 model.)

The 2009 is pretty much guaranteed to be more reliable. You have to decide what you want to do with the car though. If you get a 2009+ there are no tuning options comparable to what a cobb access port costs for the 2004-08 models. If you plan on rebuilding the engine and/or going FI then the 04 is going to be better unless you want to just start throwing money at the 09. I think one place is offering to turbo an 09+ car for $9500 if you bring it to them. You could also keep looking and try to find a newer year up to 2008.
If you just want a more reliable car that you plan on putting basic mods on and nothing big then the 2009 is a better choice.

Also, I personally wouldn't pay 11k for an 04. Especially with what sounds like some noticeable cosmetic flaws. Kelly Blue Book the trade in value...cause ultimately, that's what the car's worth at best. It's a better idea of what a dealership would potentially pay the current owner of it, if they just wanted to get rid of it quick. It'll probably be closer to 8 or $9k.
I would KBB the trade in value of the 09 as well.
Obviously the newer the car, more than likely the better. Especially when it comes to the RX8. But with that said, mine's an 04 with 45K miles and counting, daily "spirited" driver (no winters), original engine, and it's been nothing short of flawless. Aside from the routine maintenance required, my 8 has treated me very well. So I guess what I'm saying is, an older 8 shouldn't automatically be ruled out because of its age. If the price is right and the car has been properly maintained, it could be well worth it. Being mechanically inclined is also helps. But for that extra peace of mind, a newer 8 is the way to go...especially since you're new to the rotary world.

But definitely do your homework about RX series car's before making any RX purchase. Read through all of the sticky's on this site, if you haven't already, so you know what you're getting into and what to expect (both the pro's and the con's).
The more you know about the car, the more you will love the car...otherwise regardless of which year you buy, it'll just waste all of your money and become a nightmare as far as stressful situations go.
