2004 owners: what to do after end of warrentee?
I have an 2004 Auto with one year left on the warrantee with expiration set for November 2008 (I purchased 11/03). I'm on my 2nd engine and I had to return to service today and might get a 3rd engine. I need your good opinions and knowledge.
-What to do if I need a 4th engine after the warrentee expires in 11/08?
-How much is an engine change if I paid for it after warrentee?
-If I trade in for a later model, will later models likely develop the same problems requiring engine replacement? Of course that would partially solve the problem since I will be covered by the later warrantee.
-Is the engine replacement problem well known enough to hurt resale? And is it ethical for me to sell my RX-8, knowing the engine might fail?

trade it in for a different year. 04s had problems. see if you can badger the dealership to get you a really good deal on a used 05/06 or maybe a new 07.
depending on how much you have left to pay off, you could get a new car for what you owe now + a few thousand.
i dunno, i think someone did that and was quite pleased.
or you can trade it in for a another car. hyundai's from the last few years are excellent. 10 year/10k warranty. i swear, that company is on the up and up. im just waiting till they put out a rwd sports car and see where they go with that.
rx8s have terrible resale, which is why you can negotiate getting a really good deal on non-2004 rx8 with a mazda saleman. maybe.

One thing I'm doing for sure: place a reminder in my PC and PDA to have a compression check done about one month before warrantee expiration.

Your warrenty is up 11/08, just wait and trade for a new 8 thats coming out. Also if your going on your 3 engine thats the limon lay. 3 times for the same thing. Look into it. Or bail now. Trading in sucks. Try selling the car via privet.
Good luck.
Good luck.

They are rebuilt and replaced. I have my 2nd Engine in right now. So far so good. Only thing I change is the oil plugs and I'll be doing some other things too. It feels stronger now that I have rant he car on the highway.

Ugh, yeah dude, if you had to go in more than once (once shouldnt be happening anyways, but **** happens) to get the engine replaced, i would be bitching up a storm. You going in for a possible 3rd!? You need to be demanding a newer model, with NO extra cost to you, thats just BS. Seriously. Go to that dealer and talk to someone who can make some things happen. Best of luck
...oh and i wouldnt feel comfortable selling my 8 to someone knowing it was a lemon. I would get what i could on trade in rather than plague a fellow 8 owner with a problem car. Just think of what you have been through. Break the chain! LOL

Semi-good news. I don't need a third engine. Mazda informed me I had a misadjusted "crankshaft position indicator", what ever that is. I hope this second engine works out and Mazda has solved the bad engine problem. I will probably get an extended warrantee next year, and definitely get a vacuum or compression check before the warrantee runs out next year.
I looked into the 350Z and G35 again in case I wanted to replace my RX-8. Reading all the reviews and recalling my test drives of the two vehicles prior to purchasing my RX - The RX-8 is still the winner for me. Excellent steering, excellent ride for a sports car, excellent roomyness, excellent overall handling. Too bad we have to suffer so many problems. Kind of like having a high maintenance girl friend.

Lemon law in California applies within two years. Mine is a '04 purchased in 11/03. I asked the service writer about a buyback and he said "what do you expect from a four year old car?" I wrote MNAO more than a week ago and no answer. I've read on other forums that MNAO stopped responding to e-mails about the RX-8 engine problem. They probably don't have a solution yet and are stalling for time for their engineers.
It's been four visits without a solution. If I keep this up, I'm sure they will have to consider giving me a deal.
