My experience from the few cars (including my old RX7) that I have carefully tracked is that they usually get just about the city mileage figure as a long term average. That is with my driving of course, others may vary.
If the RX8 got 18 mpg that would be fine, but something like 10, 12, or even 14 should be considered a defect. I assume that there were problems early on with the car which started everyone focusing on the mileage. I have noticed more discussion on this forum about mileage than performance. Which is odd for a performance car.
Hopefully this was only a problem with early cars, from the responses I got here it seems that most are getting acceptable mileage now. If not I would urge them to see the dealer while still under warranty.
