Thumbs up 2006 Turbo Edition!

Hey all,

I stopped into my local dealership tonight to see the RX-8 up close for the first time (oh man I'm in love....) and to ask questions about it. When I asked him about the possibility of a turbo-charged edition from Mazda in 2006 he said that is was a definite and that he had personally seen a full-fledged model at a Mazda employee presentation in a Hilton hotel! I don't know if what he's saying is true but he sure sounded really confident about it. Along with other info, he's going to email me some of the specs behind the turbo-charged RX-8 (including horsepower of course). Will update when I get the email.

Dammit, now I'm torn. If this is really true, I want to wait for the 2006.....but I want an RX-8 now! Argh!

The rumor mill seems to be in high gear. Where are you located? Mazda Australia has revealed a turbo RX-8 concept. So if you're in Australia, your sales guy could be telling the truth. Also, if you look in the Media News section of this forum, you will see a thread on what's alleged to be a Mazdaspeed USA study car that is supercharged.

There's growing evidence that Mazda is planning something around the 2006 time frame, but there is still much conjecture on this topic.

I'm in the Portland, Oregon area in the U.S. If things are heating up in Australia, I wouldn't be surprised if it's true here as well. Perhaps the salesperson saw the same or similar turbo RX-8 concept car you saw. Or maybe it's close to finalized, who knows? It's getting me real excited though

if they release the turbo rx8 ... does that mean the rx7 is going to get pushed out or even replaced by a FI version of the 8? Or is Mazda gonna raise the bar for the rx7?

I'm not sure. The same salesman mentioned that Mazda was coming out with a turbo-charged 6 soon which would have more horsepower then the RX-8 (also making it the most powerful car in their current line-up) and the 2006 turbo RX-8 is supposed to have even more then that. Some scary stuff here!

Yeah, and my Subaru saleman told me that they were coming out with a turbocharged version of the Impreza next year. This was when I was test driving the WRX... Car salesmen on a whole are total idiots, there are a few exceptions though.

This has been discussed before: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-media-news-11/news-rx-7-other-mazda-models-20752/

Long thread, but I think the first posting indicates that they're indefinitely shelving the RX-7 comeback.

Seems weird to have a Turbo version AND a Supercharged version... since the Supercharged is pretty much set to be released... perhaps with the US release of the MS RX-8. I've already seen a 'supercharged' demo car on the freeway here near the US Mazda HQ, and stories have already been reported that this will be released by late next year, if not, then for 2006. On top of that, they come out with a Turbo version? Maybe it's only in Australia...

The Australian Turbo RX-8 is a totally Australian incarnation of the RX-8. In other words, Mazda of Australia developed this independently of Mazda of Japan.

Well I think in any case I'm going to buy a current RX-8. If the 2006 model is indeed turbo-charged, then maybe I'll trade up for it since the current models seem to keep their value pretty well. I'm sure the value wouldn't drop that much in a year (especially since I'll be babying the thing ) so it'd be a small price to pay.

The key word is "public consumption." It was still developed as a CONCEPT car. There's some kinda thread about it somewhere...the red one with the humongous white rims and blacked out headlights.

It (the Mazda Australia turbo) will be still very much an aftermarket stuff.

What is the difference says getting the kit from Trust or Phoneix Power in Japan, or Hymee in Australia? NONE IMHO! :D

They will not mass produce as they will not justify cost of testing, warranty, etc. Otherwise it will be $90K plus in Australia anyway. Mazda Japan WILL NOT TURBO.

Better work your own turbocharger mate.

An option type thing.... you mean the super G8 project. That is from the RE Amemiya and they may want to turbo it.

It will still be a project and race... I am hoping as much as all of us to have production type Turbo 8. But unlikely. The chief RENESIS designer had no turbo in mind and a certain few tuner in Japan aim in the NA route. Certainly not Phoneix Power, Knight sports and RE Amemiya that's all

Hey the Australian one will race around Tasmania too. See if it lasts.

MS in the US and OZ is independent from MS Japan. I doubt MS Japan will do it.

But I think MS US and OZ might. But what is the difference then from them then the Phoneix power e.g.

If they came out with a turbo 8 or not, still not convinced as to when, I think I'm more confident in aftermarket FI. Plus, I'm not going to beleive it unless I see it in a press release from Mazda. Can't trust carsalesmen. OK, quick question.

Why would they come out with a new RX-7? Mazda has already moved past the 7, they replaced it with the 8. I'm not sure if their sales could take more than one rotary powered sports car. It would make mroe sense for them to develop the current car as far as they can, instead of having two. Isn't it just wishful thinking on the part of 7 owners, or is there some source for this rumor?

I'm not an RX-7 guy, almost got one a long time ago and was talked out of it. I wish I'd bought one. But I just don't think the 7 is likely to come back.

Im not too sure, The RX7 was a very fine machine. The 3rd Gens FD3S were my favorite because that engine had very little flooding issues but one of the problems that they stopped producing them here was because the OBD was coming out and they didnt have enough time nor the money back then to figure something out..

The main reason they stopped producing them is because they couldn't sell them, all the reliability issues didn't help either.
