I was in Advanced Auto today buying an oil filter and some oil to do an oil change when I asked to see the 2009 RX8 oil filter. I heard it was bigger and was thinking bigger is better due to a larger surface area with more filter media. HOWEVER, as I was explaining to the salesman the difference between the 2004-2008 RX8's to the 2009, he persuaded me AGAINST the bigger filter because he said there would be lower oil pressure with the larger filter. Under mechanical oil injection, you need higher pressure, hence a smaller filter. With electronic oil injection, he said you already have the pressure. Does his logic sound firm? I thought it was.....I went with the 2007 filter on my 2007 RX8.

I would think a larger filter would take more time to fill and come up to pressure when you first start the car.

I don't see how it could change the average oil pressure once the engine is running.

Icemark (may he rest in peace) cut open a bunch of oil filters that fit the 8 and examined them. Made a thread about it too. It was his oppinion that the OEM filters were extremely well constructed (even better then some aftermarket filters) and that OEM filters are more then up to the task of keeping your oil clean.

I use the larger sized mobil 1 filters personally, because I want the extra filtering medium. I have no evidence to prove it is better or worse for my engine.

Larger filter will increase your oil pressure to your motor because it is flowing more and is less restrictive. I have a mechanical oil pressure gauge after the oil filter and it showed an increase in pressure when I switch to a larger purolator filter.

I would say it just takes longer to get oil filled up in it and basically starving your engine of oil longer on each start up! I'll stick with standard size

When I was at Mazda to pick up some oil filters, the tech advisor asked me which year. Apparently there is a difference b/t mkI Rx-8 and mkII. He also mumbled something about oil pressure. So best to stick with what works. Big doesn't always mean better.

same thing here, the parts guy had to go out to get my VIN number, he said there are 2 different filters by VIN#. I dont know the hows or whys that this is but I went ahead and bought 5 figuring the next part guy I see might not be as vigilant about getting me the right filter.

Anybody know why the different filters from Mazda?

I order Purolator PureOne's when they're on sale on Amazon, and there are two different filters that will fit my '05.

One is shorter than the other and fits the Miata, too.

the 09 oil filer is the same size as M-110(Mobil1), and K&N's HP-1010 and any other filter of the same size.

but the bypass valve spec is different. take K&N for example. its spec is 11-17 psi. but Mazda's OE filter for 09 spec is 20.3-26.1 psi

so I wouldnt use 09 OE filter it on a 04-08 model, if you want a bigger filter than OE I will buy aftermarket "bigger" filter and use them on a 04-08

Im using K&N HP-1008 for my 8. I have couple OE filters left. I think OE is fine for most, but I got those K&N at a sale (cost like 6 bux, why NOT) so im gonna finish those first b4 going back to OE.

did I mention that Im still breaking in my engine, they put new 5w-20 oil into my engine, I drain it at around 400 miles and of course, like all engine break-ins, oil was solid black and it seems like it has a lot of impurities there, is the oil filter not good enough ? I dont know.

I drain about 5.6 qts of oil out by jacking the car up. and put 20w50 in, will drain the oil again in 600 miles and see what sup (Royal purple and K&N filteR)
