Same here. I live in NYC and get around by bike, bus or subway. So the 8 is just for fun on weekends. (You can afford this luxury if you don't have kids. ) Anyway, I've had the car over 4 years and regularly don't drive it for weeks at a time. Always starts right up, no problem.

Clarkson once said, "Paddles are annoying sometimes, but a clutch is annoying all the time." Around town, nothing beats an auto. Manual is nice for car control and racing, but the paddles in the auto will shift as fast as a stock manual.

no disrespect to autos because I truly don't mind them, but they will not shift as fast as manual because they are a slushbox for lack of a better word. Meaning its not a true paddle shifter, it is an automatic and you can cycle through the gears on the wheel to give you a sport feeling, however it still shifts slow like any other regular auto.

DSG transmissions however....... lol....... are sick. Wish we had that kind of technology with our cars automatic trans.

I agree 100%. It is completely foolish to buy an RX-8 new anymore. Even though you can get good discounts brand new, it's still nowhere near worth it with this car. I've already seen plenty of '09 R3s with less than 10k miles on them going for less than 25K.

I got it! I sounded like Dave Chappelle evey time I accelerated saying DAM! I drove it home last night from about an hour away. It smelled really hot and if it was a new piston engine I would be concerned...should I be concerned with that smell in a rotary?

Can you define "smelled really hot"?

Not sure what you are getting at here.

Some smells are normal, some aren't.

I wouldnt be too concerned to be honest. Is the car new, if so burning plastic smells and stuff of that nature can be expected.

I always thought my car was running hot (literally, my hood prop would burn my hand if I grabbed it after a spirited drive), once I bought my dashhawk, my Coolant Temps have yet to exceed 205 degrees.

The engines just produce a lot of heat. And you can expect some moderate heat in your cupholders/center counsel from the trans and cat converter.

I think it smelled like oil. That was after I drove it home at varying speeds for about an hour. Once I parked it and drove it again the smell was not too noticiable. I just waited so long and saved for this car, don't want to mess it up. The mechanic at the dealer came out to talk to me-said it sounded like I did my research. I told him yeah and he laughed and said "so you still want to get one?" Lots of little things to know about this car and I never heard of the smell before.

I guess most of us don't notice it

As long as you don't have an actual oil leak, then smelling oil is no alarm. The series 2 engine injects more oil than the series 1, both in volume and where, so it is natural. If it was extra heavy smell, it was probably a coating on engine/exhaust to help keep them clean for transport and presentation to customers, and it burns off with the heating up of the pipes.

Nothing to be concerned about.

Considering how many owners tend to neglect or abuse their Renesis engines, you could consider the extra money for a new one as the price for peace of mind.

I agree New Yorker. Once I started doing my research I realized I wanted to make sure I got one that was maintained the way I wanted it to be. So buying new only made sense. The extra cost was my peace of mind insurance. My friend just bought a used one with doing NO research at all. She never knew about the oil checking requirements or the reving while turning off thing. I told her, she says not true...I say whatever it's your RX8 engine that's being trashed.

Well lucky for the RX8 and her, the newer models dont have as much issues with flooding as the early builds. As far as topping off oil, tell her to read her owners manual. If she neglects it, again fortunately for her and the RX8, there's a low oil light that'll kick on while she's driving. It kicks on when the oil is just above the 'low' level on the dipstick. Hopefully she's smart enough to top it off then or else.....

I notice a bit of that "hot" smell after driving mine a bit aggressively, too, especially in hot weather (and the fan stays on FOREVER after I pull it into the garage in the nasty 90 degree humid weather we've been having here). Seems normal for the car. Enjoy your RX-8! I love mine. I've wanted an RX-8 since they first came out.

The DSG in the VW GTi almost swayed me to buy it over my RX8, especially with it being 4k cheaper.

But the faux-paddles in the RX8 aren't bad, though they laid them out weird. There is less of a delay than in other faux-paddled auto cars I've driven.

Ok, nice job on picking the RX, you will love it! When I was young I lusted after the 280Z, and that was my first car, and then I got one for my second car too! The resale does go down drastically on this car, but as long as you are going to have it for awhile, who cares? It will be so damn nice having a newer one. Anyways, as an old fogie, let me just go ahead and say that you should really get a manual someday. Again, you will love the car you bought, but, you will be shocked at the level of driver involvement and connection you will feel with a manual transmission. And let me add, the RX's manual is one of the finest I have ever driven, just fantastic! So, enjoy! cheers. Jaderain

what you are probably smelling , since you got a brand new car, is the protective oil coating on the exhaust parts burning off. you shouldn't smell it any more by about 3k miles.

no he said that when testing the new Lambo. as you know in UK the steering wheel is on the right side, so the foot rest pedal is at the center of the car which due to lambo's design probably very small so theres no place to rest your left foot. thats annoying all the time.

RX8 suffers the same problem too.
left hand drive

right hand drive

^^ I wonder how the gas pedal placement is on the RHD models esp. since there is no tranny/bell housing in the way.
