So, I don't quite understand... I have a 2004 (I am not the original owner) and I called the nearest Mazda dealer and the service manager had said all recalls for my car's vin have been closed, and that the only airbag recall for the car was in 2004. Isn't it for all Series I cars?
I don't know what he is looking at, but I just left being a Service Adviser at Mazda El Cajon in San Diego. If they run your vin they can see everything. I know a lot veh still show "Prelim Letter" Which means it isn't currently open to perform said recall as all airbags are ordered per VIN#. My personal car has been sitting in "Prelim Letter" Status for about a month now. Only a matter of time.
Yes,the recall is for ALL Series 1 RX8s. It didnt start out that way, but has been increased to include all series 1 RX8s. Your dealer is not up to date from Mazda. My guess is they didn't sell any later RX's to have owners who got the recall letter, which comes directly from Mazda, and NOT from the dealer. Or their owners of later RX8s have moved out of their area, so they are getting serviced with other dealers.

I got the letter and mine is for only the passenger side. Two locals have had it done for the drivers side, one had no issues and the other now has an intermittent air bag light that they can't figure out.
I have not decided if I am going to mess with it but I highly doubt it.
I got the prelim letter a couple of months ago. A "we have the parts" letter with my VIN came a few days ago. Yesterday I made an appointment with the dealer for them to take care of it today. Really good timing, since I needed to go in for a state inspection and oil change.
Got a call from the dealer early this afternoon. They didn't have the part. They're getting one overnighted in, and will take care of it tomorrow. Will follow up then.
Update 5/14 - the inflator arrived and they completed the recall. I'm now safe from Takata shrapnel.

Reason: Status update
Well finally Mazda Australia (MMC Japan) are now acting..
ALL S1's will now have Drivers Side Inflators renewed under RECALL.
I expect UK and Europe will also announce very soon.
So effectively EVERY S1 RX-8 and (Mazda 6, B Series, E and T series of those MY years) world-wide will be included in recall with both side dashboard Inflators eventually renewed.
BTW: News also came out (last week) that TAKATA are reporting that the original replaced (recalled) inflators are possibly also defective, so we will see a recall of a recalled part already fitted..
Takata are removing the Ammonia Nitrate compound, also are currently building a brand new production line just for the 56 million units now needed (and growing), it is anticipated that this will take 5-6 years of production, so hang on..
Will be calling my dealer and scheduling an appointment
They morally (legally) had no option but to...
And was my personal dislike about this as all Car Makers (including Mazda) were basically saying that lives in the USA are more important to them...seriously?.
Mazda Canada uses the exact same part, Mazda Canada is owned/distributed an operated by MNAO a subsidiary of MMC Japan...so.....
I would wait a little as there are just not the parts available, just make certain your owner details are correct, obviously IF you are original RX-8 purchaser and have not changed address?, contact them and update your details if not.
"American Honda confirmed today that a Takata airbag explosion was behind the April death of a Louisiana woman, bringing the number of deaths linked to defective airbags from Takata to seven."
These odds are becoming really strange, WHY deaths only in Honda cars?
I guess you are seeing this, AKAIK, it means what it means, that is they don't have supplies, yet.
From what I have been told locally, all cars which had the passenger side only or both done before will need to have them replaced again with all new units which is internally different (chemical compound wise).
IF your VIN details and address have not changed MNAO have to by law contact you when parts are available.
This is going to take years and years before completed (worldwide).
I'm the original owner of a S1 2005 and have not had a letter about this. Hummm
9K Mazda had the same issue with my car's airbag light on and off. They said I need a new seat wiring harness. While the car was under warranty and they never fixed it. After warranty was out they told me too late. So I zip tied the connections under the seats and the light went away.
still waiting on supplies to change my driver's side airbag on my 2008 40 Anniversary Edition RX8. My letter was received six months ago and I am still waiting on the parts. ASH8 is right, they found out early replacements had the SAME suspect chemicals in them, and now they need to go with a different compound altogether. So who knows when we will get supplies in.
RE: Drivers Air Bag, in most (all) cases this Drivers Side Fix is an interim one under original 7914J. There is actually another proper fix coming soon under 8215F as the parts are not available yet.
Basically they are still installing the old devices in cars which have never had it renewed and or you get the same old module with new fresh propellant.
Mazda will get you back and replace this again with a NEW designed inflator from TAKATA, this is what new recall 8215F is...owners letters will be out soon.
Some vehicles under Passenger A B 8114L will also be re-recalled again for the new design.
OKAY so, had both my driver and passenger side replaced under the warranty letter last year.
I just got the notice in the mail again
is that a goof up or did I miss something?
Edit: I should read more and post after my coffee set in
