Question 3rd Gen Owner Goes to Darkside?

What’s good guys,
My name is rx7sign I am well known on the boards at rx7club.com. I own a clean 93 rx7 touring that is known for owning many car's with minimal mods. I have ran numerous car's that know there 1/4 mile time, according to that i'm in the high 12's (12.7-12.9) w/ only exhaust, dp and intake unheard of or very rare with the 3rd gen's (most don’t believe until they run me lol). My cousin owns a 97 black supra that's full bpu and power fc tuned. I am a JDM enthusiast and love the rotary like no other; anyways the rx8 is a beautiful car. I am thinking about potentially selling my car and turbo charging the 8. Please if someone could give me advice on this, what kit to use? How much power? How much will it cost? Does the renesis require the rebuild if so does mazda cover it? Will the handling compare to the 3rd gen? Anways I am happy to be on board with you guys, thanks for any feedback I hope I will be of some help too

Yeah, why get rid of the FD?

From the factory, the FD does handle better. But with grippier tires and coilovers, the RX-8 does very well for itself.

I see, that kit isnt really something I would be looking for.. Too use to Gt47, 42's, T51R's, T04Z's, T88's (oldschool), etc, 290 pound-feet of torque for 5,000 big bucks hmmm I dunno.

Why get rid of it..im not sure... It is an idea depending on how I see the rx8 holds in comparison. Hence me joining this forum for better research.

well the darkside is a completly different forum

having been on 7club for so long you should know your way a round a little. try the section called "major horsepower upgrades" for all the info on FI. there are only 2 TC kits availalble. and the Greddy aint goign to be be what you want . which means PTP or doing your own thing. everything is expensive. and those gt47s,42s etc etc are the rigth TCs for this car. have fun reading

I really don't follow what you mean by asking if Mazda will cover a rebuild? You mean under warranty? As soon as Mazda sees that turbo, you won't have a powertrain warranty.

As far as what the current Renesis can handle, look in the Major HP section for one of the 20B threads...a lot of info in there.

no a rebuild for the 3rd gen rotary motor..you have to rebuild it, they usually last 100,000 until the seal's go..

Well not too many people have 100,000 miles on their Rx-8 yet. So we can't really answer that.

As far as the turbo goes. From what I've read here, these kits will put you anywhere from 250whp to 400whp depending on other mods, and tuning.

I would say you probably wouldn't even be interested in either of those. I would consider doing a custom setup if you are comfortable enough with that sort of thing. The one thing I can say is that I've read from many who have properly tuned FI 8's that it runs well, and with no problems.

I don't think you will dissapointed as long as you are not doing this thinking you're going to beat that Supra! Even with the custom FI setup you will be doing very well to be where you are at now.

The best I've heard (1/4 mil) for a FI 8 on this board was Adrian-1 who ran a 13 flat I think. And that was on the GReddy kit. With the PTP you should be able to do even better.

MazdaTed - Actually pretty much everybody knows me in the DC/MD area or Virginia. I am good friends with one of the most well known JDM vendors or dealers on that site. Alot of others know me on the board, I didnt say "everybody" knows me lol.

dmorales - Im surprised you own the car and you don't know if it needs a rebuild. Didn't you look into that before purchasing a rotary motor. After the first month I figure you would have known wether it needs it or not lol. No i'm just kidding it's all cool, i'm sure somebody on this forum knows tho. I'm just curious if it needs the rebuild, anybody??

keep your FD and slowly back away to the door, and then turn and run.

kidding...

no I'm not. The RX-8 is great, but the FD is better. Why mess with a good thing?

Shaolin speaks wisely, your right. I might just save up continue collecting checks at this law firm and by the winter (happy turbo weather).

Project Rx7Sign:

Exterior:
-RE Amemiya front
-RE Amemiya carbon fiber taillight
Repaint
Rims not yet : (

Engine:
HKS v-mount
Power FC
Fuel Upgrades
PF Tuned (Ray) 14PSI

Suspension:
HKS Coilovers (not sure which set)
Project U brake pads & new rotars

Interior:
Single black BRIDE seat
Garmin GP System

Not all that great but if your JDM you will probably like it. It will definitely be a fun car I will post some pics and vids.. ; )

sign are yiu asking "at what mileage will the stock NA renesis seals need replacing?" if so the answer is they should last 200k or more miles. asking that on a aftermarket boosted one cant be answered becausae no one with a well built well tuned TC has found that point yet. it will be longer than 100k i suspect if mostly street driven

You must own your 7 by now... perhaps not...
anyway, why not keep your 7 and give it to your
kids/grandkids when the time is right....?
