This engine is dead as can be at 40psi. Thought I'd look for some input I'm gonna shop around starting with calling local Mazda dealers to see how much they want for the remans.
Are there any other vendors that sell remans in the sub-$2000 category? Vendors in CA would be spectacular as I could save on shipping

Wow... I'm guessing it's not running very well like that.
Are you out of warranty or do you know that your warranty will be void for some reason?
I might be wrong, but sub $2000 seems like it might be difficult, though that depends a lot on what all you need. I'm not sure if BHR will do rebuilds, but it couldn't hurt to ask since they're located in AZ.

The MSRP from Mazda for a short block is $2001.00 so I figured someone could do one cheaper than mazda. If not.. no biggie I'll just pick up a reman from Mazda

Just keep an eye out. They come along every once in awhile for cheaper then 2g. I just picked up a none re-built short block with around 10k for much less then that.
If you can find a none mazda rebuilt short block I recommend picking that up. There have been issues with Mazda remans lately.
