5W-20 vs 5W-30

All I know is that my oil temp was always between 180-220F when I had it, modern motor oil don't start breaking down untila bout 270 for regular oil and over 300 for synethic if i recall correctly. It's not my money, just a thought.
The fun factor on the RX-8 is enough to overlook its short-comings

Yeah, you're not going to want your rotary engine to go over 250 degrees. So using just that one viewpoint, synthetic is overkill.
However there are a lot of advantages to synthetic (including lowering engine temps), especially if you're running a turbo.

Why not Mobil 1? I would like to use Royal Purple, but Mobil 1 is so much easier to get a hold of. What's the issue with Mobil 1?

I am trying to pay close attention to the tail pipes for soot levels and will check the spark plugs (brand new) at the next oil change.
Let me throw out one last question and I promise not to ask another one about oil. Besides Royal Purple, what synthetic would you recommend? One that was easily available, of course.
I am a believer in synthetic oils for the rotary, but am still trying to figure out which one to use if I do not go with RP. Thank you in advance for your answers.

I know of one engine here in Houston that was killed from carbon buildup. It wold be easy to blame it on the oil but it wasn't caused by that. It was running far too rich for far too long. Fuel is a big contributer to carbon buildup. That's what killed it.
Royal Purple, Amsoil, Redline are all good synthetics and I know Valvoline is good too. There may be others and there probably are but those are the ones I'd stick with.

I guess you can say protection, but if i recall correctly, even the race car use regular oil. I don't know what you do to your car, but I can't see it needing more than regular protection unless you track the living crap out of the car.
I am a believer of synethic oil, I just don't use it on the rotary. My RX-7 did 90K miles in two years, heck it even overheated, but it ran fine even at 170K miles.

and for the oil, more protection the better. Same goes for money. Make a choice. 1 Mill or 100 Mill
