6at vs 6mt

6at vs 6mt
First off id like to note what lead to my descision to buy the auto i currently own. It was significantly cheaper than all the mt's in my area.. most likley because it is the less desired modle. Secondly the engine was replaced within a week prior to my purchase. Furthermore i enjoyed the paddles and found them to be quite responsive. However i made some assumptions that id like some opinion on. I figured that the at 6 speed auto tranny and 6 port motor cant be to far off from the performance of the praised mt model. With a accessPORT the rev limit on the auto can be set to 8500, thus giving the extra hp the mt has over the at. More importantly the change to the next gear would land higher in the powerban. Apart from lanching and a drivers ability to shift quick there isnt much that seperates the at and mt.. correct if im wrong. So from a role the two differnt options would be relativly equal. I have searched and found very little info about 6spd at's.

You guys are underestimating the 6 Port AT with the 6 speed paddle shift tranny and it's obvious you guys have not driven one. REDRX3RX8 tracks his 07' Auto and hangs with stock 6 speed manuals just fine. Jcabbie, andother SARX member has a 2010 Auto with the Revi intake and catback and it hangs just fine with stock 6 speeds.
Now if you are talking a 4 port auto versus a 6 port 6 manual then yes it would be a slaughter.
REDRX3RX8 (07' GT Auto, bone stock except BHR ignition, aftermarket tranny cooler, and Enkei wheels)

Yeah there is no doubt a 6 port MT is quicker than an AT but the difference is not huge (with 6 Port AT's) and in my experience, most people who do drive 6 speeds MT's, don't do so very well. That is why you see RX-8 1/4 mile times vary as much as a full second between stock cars.

I tracked and auto crossed mine numerous time. It is a great car but you will get killed on the straights.
The problem I always had was not being able to down shift at a time where it was needed where I know damn well it should have been able to do but the car just won't let you. And once you hit 4th gear, it is done.

I read alot of posts here before i signed up, it accually seems to me that alot of rx8 owners are unaware that there is 2 differnt Automatic Transmissions. They are 2 very differnt machines.

you seriouse? What is "inferior" to you anyway? is it inferior for someobody who lives in a city with consistant stop and go traffic? Is the At an inferior product for a paraplegic? And no its not fair that everybody dismisses At without trying it. Im not entirely sure what your trying to say by evangelize the AT.... im not even sure you have used that word correctly. This post is just asking a question. Not trying to get approval, or pats on the back... just a simple question. Dont be a dick bro.

Go? It's gone.
Is it time for me to mention Jim Hall and the Chaparrals again? Two speed Powerglide? Beat the crap out of everyone else in USRRC and Can Am?
On a les frivolous note...and in the spirit of the original question... If the ECU on an MT 8 is modified to raise the rpm limit, what are the consequences? Does the torque converter stall? Explode at 7501 rpm? Or just not last as long?
Ken

OP: at the end it's all a matter of personal preference. One tranny is not better than the other just different.
Personally, I prefer manual. I think the RX-8 can be more fun with a manual tranny - especially around twisty roads when you downshift/up shift very quickly while spinning the steering wheel like crazy from side to side, lol
But if you found the right deal with an auto, then make the best out it and have fun with the car!!!
