6th gear vs Reverse: mis-shift?

I sat in a parked 6MT today at a dealership, and noticed that 6th gear and Reverse felt VERY close.

Is this a problem for you owners out there? How easy is it mis-shift?

I read a while back about someone having problems pushing the stick all the way over into reverse - is this true?

thanks.

I haven't had a problem myself, maybe others have. If you push straight down on the shifter, it goes into reverse just fine.

Hey Lex, actually I think it would be rather difficult to mis-shift. As indicated you phycially have to push the stick down and then crank it all way right and down. Don't worry about it.

Ditto from brothervoodoo

6th is regular shifting while reverse is push down and over.

I've put it in 6th a couple of times already when trying to reverse, but I'm sure its practically imppossible to shift into reverse when going from 5th.

Cool

now, now be nice Tribal. Don't turn this forum into another one of those "Flame every chance you get" forum.

Just remember how nice we were to you when you told us about not remembering to release the parking brake.

If you want to reverse, you can mis-shift into 6th if you do not push the stick DOWN And OVER enough. No big deal.

IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO FLIP INTO REVERSE instead of 6th. They have this locked out so you won't drop your tranny.

My current car goes straight from 5th to reverse with no lock. I've only made the mistake once at 70mph and a microsecond later (spurred on by the awesome grinding noise!) I corrected it with no damage. You can't force it into reverse because the transmission rotation will lock you out. It sounds bad and isn't good though...

Yeah, you'd have to do one hell of a rev-match to actually mis-shift into reverse. Even if you did push the stick down and accidentally shift in, it would probably crunch a tiny bit and lock you out. Not like building up metal shavings is good for the transmission, but of course a crunch here and there won't spell death for the car.

edit: what I wonder about is lock-out protection against mis-downshifts. If the redline fuel cut, etc, will just shut off the engine if you miss a downshift, or if as in RSX-Ss, you can actually blow the engine straight apart. That's probably a question I could answer if I had more rotary knowledge....

I'm still a little gun-shy about going to 6th. The RX-7 side of my brain keeps telling me that is reverse. :p

Hopefully, when I'm driving the RX-7, the RX-8 side of the brain won't take control.

Would this be schizocarphrenia

Or schizophrxenia

I have both a Miata 5 and 6 speed. The reverse from 5th is still back and to the right in both cars while the 6th speed is straight back. Plus there is a lockout so you can't misshift into reverse unless you move the car to neutral for a few seconds before shifting.
